I have a PC at work here that is having some strange symptoms (Dell Precision 340, Windows XP SP2). First, IE will not prompt to install any Active X controls. I downloaded the windows code error log viewer and this is what I get when I try to install an active x control at windows update:

    *** Code Download Log entry (06 May 2005 @ 15:57:33) ***
Code Download Error: (hr = 8007007e) The specified module could not be found.

    Operation failed. Detailed Information:

No active x controls will prompt for download.

On another item (probably related) it seems I cannot download anything from download.microsoft.com. I get the following error message from items coming from download.microsoft.com:

Internet Explorer cannot download <filenam> from download.microsoft.com

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

I can download from other sites, just not from microsoft. I have checked the hosts file and it is empty. I have reinstalled Internet Explorer to no avail. I have done a Windows XP repair - zip, zilch, nada. I'm trying to avoid a full reformat as there are some programs on this pc that are in daily use and we cannot seem to find the disks for! Go figure.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Is this PC a new convert to SP2, or has it been running it a while? The CLSID entry seems to be referring to a registry key. Does your employer have the SP2 udate blocked, and have you checked to see if you have the latest version of the download software from Microsoft?

This pc was running windows 2000, and then an OS upgrade to sp2 recently. This pc has all updates and is virus / spyware free.

Try turning off the Mobile Code Control option in Zonealarm Pro. It is found under the main tab in the Privacy settings screen.

Actually, this is a work pc and the specs listed below are for my home pc. Sorry for the confusion! This pc isn't using Zone Alarm. It is using microsoft antispyware beta and trend micro office scan. Thanks for the input though!

    Have you checked these settings?

Click Tools>Internet Options. Select the Security tab. There are five settings under "ActiveX controls and plug-ins."

    1. Download signed ActiveX controls--Prompt. Signed ActiveX controls are considered safer, because they come from a known organization. But I suggest you be asked.

    2. Download unsigned ActiveX controls--Disable.

    3. Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe--Disable.

    4. Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins--Enable. Once you approved them, you wont be asked about them repeatedly.

    5. Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting--Enable.

Yes, these settings are all configured properly. All IE settings have been reset to their defaults. Thank you for your reply.

I should imagen being a work pc you've upgraded from 2000pro to xp pro as if you've upgraded to xp home this can cause problems.

Yes... this was upgraded to XP Pro. I'm not sure if this problem occurred simultaneously with the upgrade or not, but it's possible.

Well, I finally located the missing software cd that was preventing me from attempting a reformat. Did a full reformat and Active X is working beautifully again. It seems whatever is breaking Active X is very difficult to fix, if there is indeed a fix. I've read about every forum posted about this problem and ran through a million fixes to no avail. Just thought I'd share an update. Thanks to all for your replies.
