Howdy, I have been working over in spyware to get this darn thing cleaned up. I have a clean bill of health however I can not run active x.

Hp Pavillion running windows xp home sp1.
Service pack 2 was in the add remove software however the system info didn't reflect that.
I unistalled the service packs in hope of re_updating the computer.

Internet explorer seems to think it is version 6.0.2 However it does not have any pop up blocking features... While working with shadow_puter_dude. We did the following to no avail.

    ActiveX Controls are not working

    8) Exit, Reboot and see if problem remains.

    Solution #4
Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT

    Navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0

In the right-pane, double-click the value 1200 and set it's value to 0

1200 corresponds to Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins setting

Repeat the same in this registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0

In the right-pane, double-click the value 1200 and set its value to 0

Close Registry Editor and restart Windows. The restrictions message should no longer be displayed. Note that some third-party security programs enable this restriction as a measure to protect the system from attacks.

Also Norton Antivirus was installed on the computer and was not running. I un-installed it. It was when I tried to re-install it that I noticed active-x wasn't running. Also windows update is not working. It does not run on it's own and I can not do it manually from the website bc active X isnt working.

Ok this is all eeriely familiar, I have run the rnav2003. I will attach the log file. That did not help.

After that it directs you to To reinstall Windows Script 5.6
Follow the steps for your version of Windows.

    • Windows 2000/XP
    1. Go to the Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 Web site.
Guess what, I can't do it without ActiveX working. I then ran through a windows diagnostic which was completely useless and spit out:
    Error Name: TypeError
    Error Number: -2146827850
Error Message: Object doesn't support this property or method
Error Description: Object doesn't support this property or method

    Why did it not validate?

There are several reasons why validation may not have succeeded.
      • The Windows Genuine Advantage Tool requires the user account to have administrative privileges on the computer.
      • The Windows Genuine Advantage Tool requires access and is unable to communicate with the Microsoft validation servers. Please click here to learn more about troubleshooting your antivirus, antispyware, Internet Explorer and firewall settings.

when I ran sfc /scannow it didn't seem to really work.....??? I've run it on other computers where it takes quiet a long time and there is a progress bar. Here the dialog box came up for maybe 80 seconds then dissapears. I don't recollect this being the proper behavior for that tool

Boot to the recovery console from teh XP CD and run sfc /scannow. You may have to run Windows Update afterwards.

Let's try restarting your RPC Service from the Recovery Console:

From the Recovery Console (followed by enter for each line)

    enable rpcss SERVICE_AUTO_START
    enable rasman SERVICE_DEMAND_START

    [Added]
Make sure normal boot is enabled in MSCONFIG.
