    I am trying to re-install norton internet security onto my laptop (Gateway M275, Tablet Edition, Windows XP, Intel Pentium M, 1.80 GHz, 504 MB of Ram) because I got an error message that said it needed to be re-installed (don't remember exact wording or why). Anyway, when the registration screen comes up, I get a message "Your current settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly." I went to norton's website and tried the things they said to do to fix it, but nothing has worked so far. My current internet security properties are set at: Internet - medium, Trusted Sites - low with my computer added as a trusted site (norton's suggestion), restricted sites - high. Please help. Thanks.

    Re: Didn't work

    What version of Norton are we talking about? Do you have the disk for Norton to reinstall?

    Download the following utility to your desktop.

    SymNRT

    When the download is finished, on the desktop, double-click SymNRT.exe, and then follow the on-screen instructions. Restart the computer after removal is complete. After you have removed Norton and rebooted attempt to reinstall and let me know how things go.

    You can also try this.

    Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT

    Navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0

    In the right-pane, double-click the value 1200 and set it's value to 0

    1200 corresponds to Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins setting

    Repeat the same in this registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0

    Close Registry Editor and restart Windows. The restrictions message should no longer be displayed. Note that some third-party security programs enable this restriction as a measure to protect the system from attacks.

    I tried both of those suggestions (removing and reinstalling Norton and changing Registry Editor) and still get the same message when I try to register. What next?

    Something a little different:

    1. Click the following link:Save the file to your Windows desktop. If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may see the message "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" If so, click Run.

    2. On the Windows desktop, double-click SYMCLN.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

    3. Click Remove All. This choice uninstalls all of the listed products. You will see a warning message that prompts for confirmation.

    4. Click Yes to proceed.

    If you see the message "Do you want to completely remove Netscape (7.0) and all its components?", choose No. Netscape 7.0 and older Norton SystemWorks versions both use the file NSuninst.exe. Removing that file may prevent Netscape from functioning correctly.

    5. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, answer Yes.

    6. Restart the computer when prompted.

    7. Reinstall NIS.

    Do you have any other firewalls of AV programs installed?

    SPD, I will let you handle this thread as I have some work to do in the Spyware Forum.

    Good Luck!:)

    SPD - I'm not sure what happened, but downloading SYMCLN and running it did not remove NIS. Anyway, the only security stuff that is on there (that I know of) is what came with the computer. It has a Windows Security Center with firewalls and virus protection. Also, it came with another set of programs from Webroot - Spy Sweeper, Window Washer, and Ghost Surf. I've searched the norton site and completed all instructions there that I could find about ActiveX problems. I'm really at a loss.

    7. Click Apply and OK.

    SPD - I'm confused. I don't want to uninstall the program. I want to be able to activate it and use it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and this does not fix the problem. I tried all of the options listed on the link given by matacumbie, and none of those worked either. The one thing I have been unable to do is turn off the windows firewall (under control panel - security center - firewall). Turning that off is not an option. I'm going to try activating by phone. Hopefully that will work. Although, with my luck that won't work either.

    Sometimes, you have to uninstall the Norton program you are having problems with then reinstall it. You may have something (malware) that is interfering with Norton, that wouldn't be unusual. Do this, run the scans from this thread, READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal. See if that finds anything. The problem is in order for Norton to work correctly you need ActiveX controls enabled.

    To disable the Windows Firewall:

    Start -> Run
    type regedit, hit Enter
    navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
    Look in the right pane and locate EnableFirewall, double-click and change the value to 0 (Zero).
    0=OFF
    1=ON
    Exit REGEDIT

    That will disable the Windows Firewall at next reboot.
