I have been seeing an acupuncturist. He is awesome. I see him for depression and weight loss. In one month I have lost nearly 20 pounds. :hyper

    It is TimW. :)
The girl that cuts my hair told me about going to the acupuncturist. I walked into her shop and she had lost an incredible amount of weight. 135 pounds. She looks like a different person. Wow... She told me she had lost 65 pounds using weight watchers. Then she got stuck. A client told her about the the acupuncture treatments. Then she decided to try it. That is when she lost the rest of her pounds.
I have been going for about a month. The needles do not hurt at all. By the time the Doctor finishes asking how was your week the needles are already in.

He treats many different people. There are old people there for arthritis pain relief and all types and classes of people. It is really amazing.
While the weight loss part is cool it is the depression part that is so impressive. He places these 5 needles in the top of your head. Then they attach a small electric current to the needles.. It changes your entire mood. One day, I went to the office after a difficult weekend and he put extra needles in my neck. The assistant came in and said ooohhh he is taking it up a notch. It really helps. If people suffer from really bad depression you should stay on your anti-depression meds but, I suggest that you find a good acupuncturist as another form of your treatment.

I also have a friend who owns two businesses and she is stressed out to the max. She started going to the acupuncturist for stress relief. It is amazing.

    Hi

Guess this has merit, I tend to come from the scientific side of things and is acupuncture a placebo effect or not, not critisising the old art at all, just wondering as a "devils advocate", but in your case its working so hey its a great option for you and maybe for others.

I have great respect for old medicine in the artform of chinese medicine etc but some folks can be duped by the new radical forms of weightloss and not loose weight but loose a few pounds (GBP £) instead.

I think I would knowing what I do about acupuncture, would actually give it a go for an ailment, not that I have any at present that an acupuncturist could heal.

Yup Halo, placebo effect is %40 even in double-blind medical studies in humans of course, man the brain can really do some excellent stuff if it just 'believes'!:innocent:-D

My dog had bad arthritic hips and instead of continuing with the expensive pain meds I thought to try it as at that point Daisy would just lie around all day drooling, that's not a life for anyone, be they bi/quadrapeds!

I took her to some six treatments and she became a real dog albeit at 12 yrs. old. She lasted for another year relatively pain free, would go for walks, though not as quick, but that's old age eh?;) Worth every penny AFAIC!

BTW, I don't think that dogs/animals have the placebo effect response.:)

We deal with these all the time as most of my projects are 1 or 2 drugs vs a placebo, in blind random trials.

Have no doubt that the brain can work wonders as it can also be a killer in many who end up with stress due to thinking negative too much...

Wow thats neat and really glad it worked, never know on animals if they have a cognitive reasoning we have not quite fathom'd out yet.

How does this work for pain, specifically for one muscle in my back? And I don't care if it is placebo, I just want relief. My chiropractor has helped, but I still have pain.

    Hi Fred

Was reading this a while back, found the article again that maybe of interest to you http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/may/30/acupuncture-pain-natural-painkiller

The scientific side of this http://www.bmj.com/content/338/bmj.a3115.full but TBH mny have said accupuncture does relieve stress and pains as well as other ills, placebo effect or not, it is a worthwile route to take if medications etc are not working,

Have you tried the electro zap machines to ease the back pain? if not maybe worth discussing it with your MD.

Thanks for the info Halo. Unfortunately, from that article it says the pain relief is only effective for an hour, so that would not work. I will look into the shock treatment.

Hey, wait, you trying to say I am crazy and need shock therapy? :-D;)

For myself, I just plain don't like needles.
If a Dr. comes at me flicking the air out of one, I'll ask if he has a pill that does the same thing.
If he says no and keeps advancing, he had better be ready to be put on his back side.
I've seen too many break off inside a persons arm and become infected.
The ones the accupuncturist uses may be stouter, but for me, it ain't gonna happen.
I admit that it is psychological, but that's me.
    Psycho and loving it.

Well, guess a lot of us have things we avoid. I don't do heights. :-D I am looking into pain management that does not involve drugs. Only the stronger drugs seem to do me any good.

If a doctor tells me to take Tylenol for pain, I ask them why bother, it does absolutely nothing for me. Never heard of a needle breaking off in someones arm, that sounds painful. Might get my litigious side active. ;)

And don't get me started about those air-injected "shots".
Playful jokers we had in Basic Training.
One guy goosed the recruit ahead of him in line just as the Drs. pulled the triggers. One on each side.
Poor guy got twin gashes in his arms and a free medical discharge.
The gooser got the stockade to think things over.

Actually, I prefer to look at the needle(s) when being injected. Yes I had acupuncture as well and it really didn't work for me. Could have been me or the acupuncturist.

Watch this funny Dutch insurance commercial re acupuncture needles and therefore the need to get insurance in case it's too late. :cool

Acupuncture doesn't hurt, once the needles are in, it's strangely relaxing, didn't fix my problem though, wouldn't recommend it if you are in good shape :)

Why not as accupuncture is not only for physical ills, it can be for mental?

Like many alternative medicines the rulebook is kind of ambiguous as to their benefits.

Can acupuncture cure 'pins and needles'?

I've had acupuncture therapy for a number of conditions. It won't cure everything, but it successfully cured a long-standing sinus problem when I was in my 20's. On cold nights I used to wake up feeling as if I was lying in a pool of water (incontinence was NOT an issue) - I had the sensation of the water rippling up and down along my back. A few sessions under the needles took care of that too.
Currently I'm taking the therapy for neuralgia. Shingles broke out on the left side of my face a couple of years ago. The Western medicine stopped the virus and probably saved my eye too, but the neuralgia was something I had to live with. Coffee sugar and alcohol still stir up the itching. All the same, after four treatments the affected area is reduced by about half.

Like Fred and Phantom i am a chronic pain sufferer and have to take really strong med to have any effect, I tried acupuncture to see if it would help but for me it did not work.
When the needles were in i felt better but when they were removed the effect rapidly wore off.

I have no doubt that in some instances it works but not for me.

Yes their are benefits of both modern medicines and alternative medical practices, I personally belive that a mix of the two can help, indeed singles is a bad virus to have at times and depends where on the body you get it bad to the effects it can have.

I work in experimental Ophthalmology and we do try various alternatives out to help folk keep their sight, Anti_VEGF and in part Radiation are some on the new-ish approaches.

Indeed accupuncture like any medicines will not cure all but to rule it out if you are physically well is where I was coming from, as you maybe physically fine, but accupuncture as with other althernative medicines can help mental issues, so while it may not work for all the practice cannot be ruled out entirely.

I would be willing to try it, but no places near me. :( TENS works pretty good, but the wires get in the way.

Yeah seems to be one of the pitfalls of TENS the wires
