Which would be the better choice.

Well, the free versions of each do not offer active real time protection, only 'after the fact' scanning and removal of malware. AVG's has real time protection for 30 days (I think) and it's deactivated if not paid for. Both have excellent detection rates, but, personally, I like AdAware better. It's scans are a bit slower (IMO), but I've been using AdAware for years so I guess maybe it's just a familiarity type of thing....

    Why not both?

I agree with dlb. I've used Ad Aware for ever and it's good. Spybot is possibly better than AVG

Different apps are required to remove different spyware/malware, so more than one can be used. In this instance you could have both those installed as they are not real-time protection (the free versions anyway).

I've used Adaware for years as a standard. I must admit that other than cookies, it has found nothing for years other than Related.htm and Alexa files which are installed with Internet Explorer products. I'm not certain if this is simply because I am much more savvy in terms of what I download (This, I believe could be true) or if it really is not as valuable these days as it was in the past.

I do not like the newest version of Adaware. I have uninstalled it for preference to the original version. Adaware 2007 seems 'uncomfortable' and buggy in it's task and unfortunately not for the moment quite up to the work it has to do. This is a personal perception so I suggest that you do as we all do and give it a trial on your own system. I certainly don't feel that you are in danger of damaging your system by giving it a trial run.

I am very satisfied with the performance of AVG Anti-Spyware (free version is my brand) as it is available today. I think that earlier versions of that product used to be resource hogs, but it now seems fairly friendly with all of my computers. Unlike the newer version of Adaware (2007) It doesn't seem buggy in operation. But, ;) I must admit, I haven't been finding a lot of spyware, etc.

I would guess that the best protection from junk is good old plain experience and a mind alert to suspicious-type websites and softwares. It is probably the newbies in this case who download and install every shiny trinket that may be offering the best reviews of these products... They really need them !!!
