    Hi,
I downloaded Mcafee 8.0 which caused major problems with internet- running slow, shutting down with error messages, not being able to type in small caps vs. capital letter, (no control over this), tried various things, such as making sure no other virus systems on computer, re-installing McAfee, etc. McAfee suggested going to MajorGeeks and downloading Ad-Aware which I did, (free version). Not to computer saavy so please help because now on internet I am not authorized to do anything! I put in isolation all suggested files and now what? I can't tell if computer will is fixed now since internet doesn't get a chance to run with McAfee re-installed. I hope somebody understood all that I did! By the way, all of this has taken days out of my life and I am thinking of taking up drinking!
    Thanks,
    Marianne

    Mcafee

I have read multiple threads in other forums about mcafee causing major problems, but not exactly like this. I would try another av and see if that helps. As above poster stated need a little more info, but AVG is a good solution.

Hi as the others have said a little bit more info would be helpfull..... along the lines of,

Which windows version you using ( XP, ME, 98 ) and are you classed/logged in as the administrator if its XP?

do you have a Firewall installed ( ZoneAlarm, Norton, Kerio etc ) ?

I say firewall installed as McAfee 8 tends to want to attached to the internet right away after install so if you not allowed it to access the net then it may limit your access!

IF you uninstall McAfee does you internet work ok?

What Anti Virus program did you have before?

I know questions questions...... but we cannot have you hitting the bottle ;)

    Re: Mcafee

    :)

    Hi,

It's me, Marianne. Still fighting the McAfee prob. I have XP. I printed out 5 pages of Windows Error Reporting messages. Every message that came said, "Sorry have to shut down, Would you like to report this problem to Microsoft?" Then Internet would shut down, I'd have to shut down computer, and restart. I have no firewalls going now, no AV going and that is why everything is working fine! How can I avoid this problem if I go to say, Norton?
    Thanks, Marianne

Definately install some AV and firewall. Personally i like the comobo of Norton AV & Internet Security. AVG & Zonealarm are also good. Install spyware like ad-ware and spybot search and destroy. Of course uninstall the mcafee software. AVG And zonealarm have free versions. This should speed up your pc after installing and running these.

Un-installing something that won't go away!

    Hi,

Thanks for the great advise! I un-installed the McAfee Anti-Virus but the Security Center said it can't be un-installed because parts are missing so it needs to be re-installed first! When I go back into McAfee, even though I am allowed to per my contract!
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate any and all help. Also, SpyBlast is popping up all the time now. Was this a part of McAfee? I can't find it to delete. Is it under some other name?
    Thanks,
    Marianne

I would be tempted to as you have access to the retail download section of Mcafee re-download Virus Scan 8, install it again as it looks as if you had a doggy download ( quick question did you download the full executable or did VS8 install whilst you were on-line? )

then once installed un-install to remove all parts hopefully sucessfully IF not I would fire an email to McAfee.

I installed VS8 on mine to test it out... didnt like it because of the Control Center, to me it was too intrusive SO I went back to my companys VS7.

Spyblaster is not part of McAfee it will be this one http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2859 it doesnt search or remove spyware just attempts to stop it from being installed in the first place so if you are going to rely on this it must be kept upto date, personally I would also have in my spyware arsenal either Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D or SpySweeper.
