    Good Morning !!

I have been having come MAJOR probs to say the least ... After some intense reading on this site, I have downloaded AVG, Spyware Blaster, & Ad-aware (within the last few days). Unfortunately some probs still exist and am hoping that someone can help me out.

My computer will be 4 years old in Dec ... and well frankly is a piece of junk as far as I am concerned ... but for now it will have to do ... Here is some info on it ... Not sure what other info is needed ....

    IBM Aptiva
    AMD ~ K6(tm) 3D processor
    88 MB RAM
    Windows 98

First of all I have a question ... a friend of mine has a computer that needs a new mother board ... can I take the memory out and use it in mine ??

Ok, now to the good stuff (HAH!)

I have restored my computer 2 times within the last year ... I constantly get the "blue screen" and recently this is what it reads .......

"Fatal Exception OE has occured @ 0028: CO2A27A8 in VXD VWIN32(05)+000012DO" ... can or does anyone know what this means ?????

I also constantly get lockups and rebooting for the most part does NOT help !!!

Within the last week I cancelled my free AOL service and downloaded
PEOPLE PC.COM ~ since that time my computer has been acting even stranger than before .... ... after downloading peoplepc I was UNABLE to even open my control panel, unable to perform scandisk or defrag ... its telling me that a another program is open, but there is NOTHING open .. I am closing EVERYTHING out as I have done so many times before when I run these ... not making sense to me ...

My Norton Anti-Virus (JUNK !!!) was out of date & as I said within the last few days I downloaded AVG which picked up 2 viruses ...... they are both trojan horses
    1) PSW.Briss.G
    2) PSW.Briss.E
Question on this is .... They were both healed BUT is there anything else that I need to do ?? Even though they are "healed" are they still infecting my computer and what EXACTLY does "healed" mean ??

Also, been trying to run this Ad-aware and it freezes up on me, when I control alt delete it tells me that the program is not responding and I end up just shutting it down ... can someone PLEASE HELP !!! I am ready to throw this thing out the window and FAST !!!!!!

One more thing, I am sorry if there is something here that could have been found elsewhere on this site but I am exhausted at this point ~ I was not able to find anymore info so thats why I am posting this .. THANKS !!! :(

Your two first questions really belong in different forums. The first belongs in hardware and the second in software.

The RAM may or may not be compatible depends on whether your friends motherboard is similar in type to yours. RAM type has changed thru the years.

For your blue screen problem, see this link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q190/9/15.ASP&NoWebContent=1

    and this one: http://www.techadvice.com/specs/answer.asp?aid=407

For your peoplepc problem do you mean the dialer:
    http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/p/peoplepc_dialer.asp

    or PeopleOnPage:

You should follow all the steps in this Sticky thread < READ ME FIRST: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal >

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

Thanks for your reply and I apologize for not putting my questions in the correct category .. this is all new to me so please bear with me ! :(

I am not sure what you mean by this question that you asked For your peoplepc problem do you mean the dialer ???
I wanted to try it free to see if I like it, and it is dial up .. I downloaded a file from the Internet and began to have probs with opening control panel, etc .......

I went to the sticky thread already You should follow all the steps in this Sticky thread < READ ME FIRST: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal > , BUT it doesnt look like it will work for windows98, or am I missing something ??? I see Windows ME & XP, especially in Section 1 ... I am confused ... please HELP !!

I am going to try all the things that you are suggesting and will let you know ...

Simply skip the steps which are specific to me, w2k, or XP - 98 does not have system restore, so there is no need to disable it in that step. ;)

As for RAM, unless I'm mistaken your system needs PC100 SD-RAM... Your CPU runs at 500mhz, on a 100mhz FSB, so I believe that will do you. If your friend has SDRAM and the FSB for his CPU runs at a frequency of 100mhz, then you can use his RAM. Report what CPU he has and I can tell you if it will work. I don't specialize in antiques, but I believe this is right. ;)

You'll need to follow chas's advice as best you can before I can comment on any software errors or blue screens. :-/

    Harley,

I.M.O.G is correct you just need to skip things that do no pertain to your OS. That is rather clearly stated in steps 1 & 2:
1: Disable System Restore temporarily (WinXP & WinME only)
    2: Network Security & Workstation Netlogon Services (Windows XP, 2K, NT);

So skip steps 1 & 2 and continue with the rest.

My question about "For your peoplepc problem do you mean the dialer " was merely trying to find out which one of the two items I list you really meant. Sounds like you meant http://www.peoplepc.com/. I was going to suggest using Add/Remove programs to uninstall it but it sounds like you cannot get to Add/Remove Programs. See if they have an uninstall included in what they installed.

Whew, you guys are the BEST !!! Ok, thanks once again for replying ~ I am going to go through all these steps ... and HOPEFULLY things will be back to "normal" ...

I.M.O.G. ~ I will also have to get the info on my friends computer .. its about 3 - 4 years old also, but its an "off" brand .. as he bought it from a TV program ... ... But I will get back to you on that one and hopefully you can provide me with an answer whether or not it will work !!

    Thanks again !!

    I will be back .. :p

    ~ HQT ... :)
