Greetings. I'm a new enrollee in these forums, but a longtime visitor to/fan of MajorGeeks.com.

I'm tutoring a friend of mine who has an old PC running Windows 95. It's got plenty of RAM and hard drive space.

The MajorGeeks listing for Ad-Aware SE Personal v1.06 indicates "WinAll," and many other software distribution sites specifically show Win95 as OK for this software.

Yet Lavasoft, the manufacturer, lists Win98 as the earliest OS that works. What's the truth? Anybody actually use this on Win95?

It won't work on 95. Generally, only OSes that are still at least in an extended support phase would be considered in the WinAll category. Soon, 98(se) will be gone, and then Windows ME, too, unless the software writers feel giving enough to keep support alive. It usually doesn't work that way.

Otherwise, one could assume it works on Windows 3.1 too ;)

I don't think it will work, but there are literally dozens of sites that say it's supported, even though Lavasoft themselves don't.

Just goes to show how much rubbish there is on the Internet.

For anyone besides myself who's interested (and... thanks to the prior responders): elsewhere I did find a method of getting Ad-Aware SE Personal to run on Win95. Seems it's the installer that won't do its job on Win95, not the program itself.

Unlike most software, Ad-Aware SE Personal is more or less self-contained, not needing to weave itself into the registry and so on. You can make a copy from another (Win98 or higher) and put on the Win95 machine without using an installer.

First zip the entire Lavasoft folder that is in C:\Program Files on a source machine (Win98 or higher) that already has Ad-Aware SE Personal up and running.

Place that new zip file into C:\Program Files of the target (Win95) machine and unzip it, re-creating C:\Program Files\Lavasoft folder there. Delete the zip file.

In the new C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal folder, look for the application file called Ad-Aware. It should have a red circular logo. Make one or more shortcuts for it.

Move the new shortcut(s) to any desired location on the target machine from which you might want to launch Ad-Aware.

Only problem is how reliable it will be.

A lot of things or workarounds are possible, but if the manufacturer says it's not supported, I wouldn't hold much hope as it hasn't been thoroughly tested or written for it.

Anyway, thanks for at least posting back and good work. ;)
