This just started this afternoon... I'm trying to run AdAware (v.6) and it keeps hanging at Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs:C:\Windows\System32\xcomm.dll

Not a lot of info, I know, but that's all I know... Any ideas why it might be hanging up there?

    C:\Windows\System32\xcomm.dll is a BitDefender file.

AA6 is no longer supported so you're out of date by a couple of months. Install Ad-Aware SE and update.

I'll pick up AA Se and see if it makes a difference.

As for BitDefender, that would make sense... I started to try it based on some other advice (regarding some rather tricky spyware) but cancelled it at the install screen (though it was online). Odd that it would have so many files though, if I hadn't done anything with it yet...

I would follow those instructions, but bitdefender was never fully installed so there's no uninstall file or entry in Windows Installer Clean Up. It was only with the online bit, so there're no files I can see.

No, just gave it to you to help locate any files or reg entries maybe left behind.

But it can't run since there's no program I can find TO run..... Should Ij just be manually deleting the reg keys it indicates?

As for AA-SE, it's still hanging at that DLLs.

Regedit is now crashing again if I try and search for files.

    Lovely.

One thing that works fairly well is to reinstall BitDefender which should let you uninstall it normally. Worth a shot.

That's a good point. I am glad you noticed the AdAware (v.6) entry, I looked right over it, I usually double-check everything.

    Thank's, Steve

Believe me I tried that too, and I still had the problems.

I gave up, wiped the drive, reinstalled Windows. and am working on getting programs and everything back now.

Whoever invented and uses spy/mal/ad/ware should be shot.
