Just fired up a new system. HP Pavillion AMD 3000, 512 Ram, 120G Hd running XP home w/Service Pack 1. Running Norton Antivirus 2004 and Norton Personal Firewall 2004. I downloaded and installed Adaware SE from this site. Problem is when I run Adaware I get the following:

I recieve an error stating that windows will shut down in 45 seconds. Save data. Shutdown was initiated by NT Authority/System. Then below that message, it says, Windows must restart because Remote Procedure Call RPC service terminnated unexpectedly.

I tried Disabling both Antivirus and Firewall and same thing happens ?? Is there a process I must terminate in order to run Adaware on this system ?

Thanks in advance for the help..

    Hi again smittji,

Thought about your symptoms over dinner and realized I had the wrong worm.
I apologize for jumping the gun. Feel free to beat me. Here is a link that better addresses your problem (I hope)

Thanks for the help and info. Your 2nd post is exactly the symptom I am showing with RPC terminating unexpectedly. I followed the Trend link and had them run a virus checvk and their results came back negative for viruses/wormsw. Also my Norton (2004) does not find any viruses/worms.

An interestiung note which I feel is related. My Norton 2004 does find 12 Adaware attacks but it will not delete them. I think I am going to have to do a manual search on all of them and delete them my self.

Also, when I do run Adaware it continues to scan until the RPC shuts down at 60 seconds and doing that timefram I have over 50 suspicious objects which is way more than I have ever had with any of my other systems..

Are their other spyware programs as good that you might know runs well with NOrton antivirus and firewall ? If I can find that maybe just getting rid of adaware is the simplelest way.

    Hi guys,
Sorry about the Sasser post - I read RPC but my tiny brain processed it as lsass. Nagged at me all through dinner.

Smittji - I seriously doubt Ad-aware is the cause of or a contributor to your problems. I would guess that you are behind on your SP1 critical updates. If the computer is new, though, I'm surprised that the Hotfixes aren't there. Perhaps check your firewall as well?

I suggest, since it is bugging you, that you uninstall Ad-aware for now. Then FIRST follow Halo & Chaslang's instructions for Blaster EXACTLY as they tell you.

Then, when you are sure your firewall and antivirus are running properly and all of Windows Updates are up to date, if you are still worried about Spyware etc... CAREFULLY follow the instructions on this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

I will be away from my computer over the weekend, but Halo and Chaslang are much more qualified to help you than I, so you are in good hands :)
    Best Luck,

    PP

Thanks for all of the help. I have all of my SP's up to date as that was the first thging I did when I fired her up. I ran three different Antivius programs and couldn't find anything. After reading through some posts and looking at the download history I decided to try Spyware Blaster and Spyware S&D. BOth programs ran fine and both found issues which I had them correct. I also ran a Hijack this and fixed anything suspicious there. Ironically after all this Adaware runs just fine now ?? I sort of want to just say "don't touch it and it will be fine" but I would really like to know what caused the whole fiasco.

Can the Blaster worm be running and not be listed in the running processes ? I also have over 49 processes running/active which seems a bit high but I also have never ran Norton Firewall and Spy Blaster.

Again, thanks (as always) for the help. Everytime Iam costantly learnig things from this forum and the help is awesome.

I also got the same problem when running Adaware, but no other time. This computer is almost brand new. The first thing I did after I installed windows xp pro was to go to windows update and get it up to date. The only critical update I havn't installed is SP2, but the whole blaster thing was fixed way before SP2. It seems odd that Adaware would spark something that would cause this error though. But this isn't the only thread i've seen about this problem. Perhaps there is some malicious spyware out there when it detects adaware running could cause something like this? Just an idea...

Please start your own thread! And describe what you mean by you have the same problem when running Ad-aware. (And is it Ad-aware SE?)

If these problems with Ad-aware SE continue, please try uninstalling Ad-aware SE via Add/Remove Programs. Then reboot your PC. After reboot, download a new copy from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
Now reinstall and update. See how it looks now.

    Hi DRAC,

This is interesting. Haven't encountered it before so I probably couldn't help you. However, as chaslang suggests, start a new thread dealing with your problem. There are a lot of wise people here and someone is bound to have a fix :) And, frankly, curiosity hasn't killed this old cat yet!

Perhaps include the error report data?

Why should I start my own thread when I'm having the same problem as the smittji and was trying to add some knowledge to the same pool? Awkward. Next time I won't bother.

Anyway, I think some malicious spyware is involved. I ran spybot, which found a few things, then I was able to run Adaware without any problems. I've also seen some people on other boards that were able to run adaware again after running spybot or other anti-spyware tools.

Because that is the process we follow. We work on one user's problem in a thread otherwise it gets confusing. What's to stop a third or a fouth (etc) from jumping in with a problem? Did you notice that DRAC2GUNZ also chimed in and was told the same thing. You were asked to start your own thread so your problem could be worked with you.

It's okay to comment on the original poster's problem and it is okay to even say "I have the same problem". But unless you start your own thread don't expect an answer for your specific problem. In many cases (not all) a solution for one user's problem is not necessarily the same as for another. So comments here on smittji's problem are fine and you can even reference your thread (if you start one) but this thread belongs to smittji.
