Whenever I load a new AdAware SE def file from Major Geeks I now get an
error message when I try to run AdAware SE. I cannot use the new AdAware as I have Win ME.

" An error has occured while loading def file"
This has occured with the last 4 def file updates I have downloaded when I
    run AdAware SE.

I just loaded "Ad-aware SE referencefile SE1R254 27.05.2008" and it did the
same thing. Are any other AdAware SE users having trouble?

I thought Ad Aware SE was not longer supported since they upgraded to Ad Aware 2007.

    (k....looks like I was wrong)

Gotta say I'm having the same problem as lschmidt :cry

The web update part of Ad-aware hasn't worked for me for some time - the latest update it see is SE1R210 Dated 27 December 2007.

The downloads via MG worked until about two weeks ago.

Maybe its trying to make me update from W98SE. rolleyes

Still Spybot S&D still works OK. :)

After poking around the Lavasoft forums a bit, I've confirmed that yes, support for Adaware S/E has expired, and the web update will no longer function.

However, there does seem to be a workaround by manually downloading the definition files, unzipping them into the adaware folder, and restarting the program.

Not found anything concrete one way or another, seems the Lavasoft website doesn't even want to acknowledge there ever WAS an SE in favour of their new products (of course), but the people seeking the workaround all seemed to have professional (pay-for) editions of the program. And there were routes to free version upgrades for them, so not sure how practical the work around is.

For the free SE version users, it seems like a heck of a lot of work to maintain a backup scanner, if it would even work for them at all!

I read this thread a few days ago and decided perhaps it was time to remove Ad-Aware SE and install the newer version. I found that Ad-Aware 2008 is the latest version, and I got it. I haven't used it enough yet to make a declarative statements about it. All I can say is that it seems to have more features than Ad-Aware SE and I'm not using certain new features yet such as Ad-Watch realtime monitor. And, so far, it seems OK.

@usafveteran; I'm using Ad-aware 2008 on my other PC which does have XP and it certainly appears to work quite well - only trouble is for people who haven't got all their PCs on XP or above is that it won't work on older OS'es.

Oops, I overlooked that key fact. Well, at least you still have Spybot S & D, and I'd also use CCleaner with an older OS, since it can cleanup browser history.
