Adawear Windows 98

hey whats up
ha ha dont say get XP or Vista rolleyes

i got Adawear SE personal build 1.06r1
and i updated the REF file manualy..like 234 days ago ..
and i thought well thats it for me..
no more adawear updates for Win98:cry..
going threw your download page..

can i downlaod that REF file and use it to update my stuff???
my Oldie 98 stuff..

plus am i crazy???
i swear windows 98 runs like crazy on newer systems..
like on my MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR..2.6 Amd..512 mb 400ddr..
am i just seeing things?..
or does windows 98 really run faster then XP..on newer faster systems?
i swear it boots faster..
and opens things faster..
runs programs faster..
i swear it runs like a rocket..
and it just seems like it runs way way way faster then XP
am i crazy..and just seeing things?

Hi

Not got a Win98 PC lying around to test this one but I dont see why it would not work, epecially if you have got AdAware SE 1.06r1 installed on your PC.

I would just jump in a try it out, but backup the folder ( highlighted in bold) at this location C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\ ( or where ever its located on your Win98 PC ) first to another folder somewhere else on your PC, My Documents is fine.

Older OSes can run quicker than their newer counterparts as they are lighter in the GUI and core components area, especially WinXP and Vista, but like everything it depends on hardware specs and what you have installed, tweaked and cut down on startups that slow the boot process up.

yeah it didn't work...i kinda figured it wouldent...
your web page threw me off a little because
it said Requires: Win All ....
i just thought maybe some Major Geek somewhere
did something to make it work on Win 98..
i kinda figured it woulden't...
i guess when your Web Site says..
Requires:Win All..
nowdays that only means Xp and Vista
i guess unless it specifically says 98..

(do you think i could be the last and only Win98 user?)

HEY WHATS A GOOD PROGRAM like Adawear
that is update-able..
that works on Win 98 still?
Anyone know one that they would recommend?

Hi

AdAware and autoupdate for the SE 1.06r1 version was discontinued early this year iirc, but as far as I know the manual files should work fine, as MarkT mentions did you unzip the files first then copy the contents of the unzipped file to that folder location I mentioned.

In the Zip file you downloaded from Majorgeeks there will be a file in it called defs.ref, right click and copy this file then open the location that AdAware is installed in and likely to be this one C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\ then check to see if a defs.ref file is already there? if so then right click in a blank space in the folder adn choose paste and if your given an "overwrite" file warning click yes/ok to this and the new Def file will be saved, then open AdAware and hopefully you should be upto date, will have to periodically do this as its worth keeping upto date with this def file as without it your running risk of missing something,

As for one thats currently supported in Win98 and does still update is Spybot Search and Destroy

pictures speek louder than words..lol..
heres what i did...

1..down loaded file..un ziped it...copied the new REF DEF's..
2..put Ref Def in the Adawear program folder...clicked yes

man pictures are so much more eaiser then typing babble..lol..
and i can babble..lol...
yeah everybody should use pictures..
their so much easier to understand..
anyways...
did i do it right???
the Ref Def file don't work with 98 do they..
and if you say yes like i think your going to..

The last time you updated the definitions was in February. The program has been updated since then.
Here is the updated program from July

whether there were any more program updates between July and November, I don't know.

You are trying to install definitions to the old program; perhaps that's why you are getting the error.

hey plodr..whats up buddy..
you know im using windows 98se right?
i know that Pic says FEB on my Ref file (2.4Mb)..
thats because i renamed it in FEB messing with it..
i think thats when i last tried a Update using a Ref file some web site said would work...
it didn't..
maybe there might be a newer version of the program that works on Win98..
beside 1.06..
all i ever did was update the Def's..i never updated the program..
i think thats the last one that worked on win98..
anyways..
ha ha look why bother updating a OP system..
the first 2-3 years no one has software that really works for it..
and theres all kinda bugs with it and no one has drivers for it...
then 4-7 years FINALLY everyones making softwear and Drivers for it..
and they get most of the bugs out..
then what??
3 years of a operating system..
then BOOM!!...no more support!!!...
what better way to make money then to MAKE!! everyone
buy a new OS every 10 years..
anyways...
who needs a 5 million Tara-bit Octa- processor
with 5 google-plex's of memory
and 80-infinities of hard drive space..
if all you do is just chat, send e-mails, and surf the net..
kinda over kill..
ha ha i babble alot..
i wonder if anyone read it this far..
stay outa trouble...YOU!!..lol..

yeah i love win98..i think it was the best..
put Win 98 on a newer computer..
see how fast it boots and does tasks...
way faster then XP on the same system..
