WinXP Home SP2. I have Googled this and tried about 6 different things and none of 'em work. A dude I know wants "Hibernate" added to the shut down menu. I've seen it before, so I know it's possible. I've created reg keys aplenty and none work. Yes, I've rebooted in between each reg hack, and still no "hibernate" button. I've tried these methods:
    http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkwXOZ...o.php/add-hibernate-shutdown-menu_t12073.html
    http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkwXOZ.../top-tips-how-to-enable-hibernate-button.html
    http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkwXOZ...s.com/jkontherun/2006/07/put_the_hiberna.html
I ran the following reg 'script' which adds the option to enable/disable the "add hibernate button" to the Folder Options menu. It's there, but the button still doesn't appear in the shutdown menu... here's the reg script:
This even included screen shots showing the button, but no dice for me :cry Here's the link: http://msfn.modrica.com/board/lofiversion/index.php/t65301.html Scroll down about two-thirds of the way.... there's even an article at the MS Knowledge Base! And it hasn't worked either! (link http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;893056 )
:banghead So... how do I add the hibernate button to the shut down menu?!?!?!
    Thanks!

(I've even attached screen shots to "prove" that all is as it should be, but still no hibernate button!!!)

Something about a hotfix KB893056 that goes along with those registry settings? The download link is at the top of the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893056 page. Not sure if you had installed the hotfix.
That hotfix contains a Msgina.dll file which involves that shutdown dialog window, so that may be a clue.

Others have used Resource Hacker to modify the file and add a button.

dlb, if the mouse is pointed at Standby and then the Shift key pressed, does Standby change to Hibernate? Can the computer actually be put into hibernation that way?

Did that a long time ago. Not an issue, and not the fix. Thanks though!
    Yes. And it works.
Nope. I didn't see it. Since I'm not able to get to the PC in question now, I'll look at it tomorrow. None of the links I looked at said anything about this hotfix. I did look at the MS Knowledge base article, but at the time I was already frustrated and just skimmed it. :-o That's probably what the problem is.

Yes. This is on a PC that was formatted and reloaded with clean XP Home yesterday. All the drivers have been installed too.

The end result should look like this:

    EDIT-
the owner of the PC just called me and he said "don't worry about it" so I guess I won't. But at least now I know how to do this in the future. ;)
