trying to clean up my computer, and there's some stuff I don't know what is and whether or not I should yank it, so if anyone on the list can inform me, I'd appreciate it.

    what is 7-Zip 429 beta?

    ASTRO?

    XnView 1.82.4?

and with an old computer, when I tried yanking part of the packaged program, things didn't go so well...so I assume that's a given with all computers?

I either know what all the other files in add/remove programs are, or it's obvious they are integral to the hard drive's operation, so I'm leaving them alone.

thanks for helping me on this.

7-Zip is like winzip or winrar. Compression/decompression tool. http://www.majorgeeks.com/7-Zip_d4603.html

ASTRO. You got me on that one??

    XnView is a photo viewing/manipulating program. http://www.majorgeeks.com/XnView__d4974.html

Do you mean the pre-installed trial software (bloatware)?
    PC Decrapifier

The PC Decrapifier will uninstall many of the common trialware and annoyances found on many of the PCs from big name OEMs.

    thanks, evilfantasy,
well, ASTRO has an earth globe icon next to it, does that help? I'd think a globe icon would be for internet, but who knows?

not the trial package, no, but the so called "standard package" which isn't standard for all computers. my old computer had a game package that came with it. my desktop came with MSOffice and some other things. my laptop came with....have to go check...music jukebox and Quicken, for a general idea. my guy's laptop came with a different set of things, also. so each computer's a bit different, I never know what's going to show up until I start up the computer for the first time.

The Google Earth Icon is a blue earth looking ball. That could be it. Are you in the USA?
I Googled Google ASTRO and found results in Spanish (I think) Maybe short for Astrology? http://www.tecnomaps.com/index.php/2006/12/29/google-astro/
Maybe Google Earth is called by a different name in other countries?

Removing pre-installed jukeboxes and word programs I have found will result in warnings.
I don't want to advise one way or another but, I "think" the warnings boil down to if you remove them you may loose some functions on your computer. Like listening to music or opening documents etc.
This is true if you have no music player or whatever installed at all. But there are plenty of substitutes to the pre-installed software that comes on new machines.
I hope I said that right, lol.
