ADD/REMOVE IE 6 Problem

This is a problem which I first noted when we were working to solve a URL problem in thread http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=81129.

When I go to the ADD/REMOVE program to try to repair IE 6, IE 6 is not on the Uninstall list. I've tried going to the Add/Remove Windows Components function, IE 6 is there but, when I try to install it, nothing changes. The same holds true for Outlook Express, which is also missing.

Hope you can help me with this one.

No, I haven't tried that. It looks like that is for XP not Win 2000. Reluctant to try unless I am sure it is ok.

I have tried the sfc /scannow but it asks for a CD ROM which I don't have. I do believe that the original files are on my hard drive, if anyone can tell me what to look for.

OK. I've done that and there is no change.

    The registry shows the following:

    [Default] | REG_SZ | Internet Explorer 6

Hope this might give you any other clues to follow.

As I said before, I have tried the sfc /scannow but it asks for a CD ROM which I don't have. I do believe that the original files are on my hard drive, if anyone can tell me what to look for and where on my hard drive.

Yargwel, can you take a look at my other thread I have working at http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=84084?:)

Backup these keys, then change the isinstalled values to zero. Reboot, then you can reinstall both OE and IE from the web.

Am I missing something? I see where you tried sfc, not downloading it from the net.

Yes, I have already made those changes, reinstalled IE6 and updated all Microsoft downloads. That is what it looks like now after the facts!!

Then your issue isn't with IE.

What is the problem, aside from Help?

I never said it was an IE problem. I quote my original statement:

When I go to the ADD/REMOVE program to try to repair IE 6, IE 6 is not on the Uninstall list. I've tried going to the Add/Remove Windows Components function, IE 6 is there but, when I try to install it, nothing changes. The same holds true for Outlook Express, which is also missing.

Everyone who has responded said it was an IE problem. I just want it to IE6 and Outlook Espress to be in my ADD/REMOVE progams, So I can run repairs if I need to.

If you have Service Packs installed, then IE will NOT be listed.

That is by design. If you need IE to be listed, you must uninstall the Service Pack.

You can either run sfc /scannow which will repair both IE and OE, or you can look in your Windows Inf folder for ie.inf and right click and install.

    >download>click more>click reinstall IE

ALTHOUGH as Insomniac pointed out IE, nor OL will be listed in the add/remove programs list. They are in the Windows Components list.

And if you every need to repair Outlook or IE (I'm not sure why you're concerned about this) dial-a-fix will repair them for you. On the opening screen, the best thing to do is check all of the boxes and click GO.

If you don't have admin permissions then run it in safe mode.

    Good Luck!

Do you have the folder i386?

search > (click) advanced options > (check) search system folders > (check) search hidden files and folders > (check) search subfolders > (type) i386

If you have this folder you can do a sfc /scannow without the CD.

  23. hutchfred

    hutchfred Private First Class

    Yes. It is in C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
    and in C:\WINNT\Drivers\i386
    and in C:\ProgramFiles\Bellsouth\jre\lib\i386
    and in C:\ProgramFiles\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\i386

I know that the two i386 files in the ProgramFiles are not the ones you are talking about. However, when I try to run sfc /scannow, it keeps stopping and asking me for the CD. How do I direct it to the i386 files or does it do that automatically?

    Hi Hutchfred,

I had you confused with someone else, and I thought that you were running XP. I'm looking up the sfc keys for 2000 right now. I'll get back to you shortly.

I am concerned about one thing. While I'm looking this up will you search for 'dllcache folder', and see if you have an i386 folder in there?

Also, did you run the dial-a-fix suggested earlier? If not, do that now and check everything in the <registry section> then click GO. Do this as an administrator.

I'll be back in a little bit.

    > Administrator access required.
    > Create a new folder in C named I386. Copy both of your i386 folders into C:\I386.

    1. Start > Run > (type) regedit
    2. (Locate) HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
    > In the Right window pane you will see 'Source Path', 'Service Pack Source Path', and 'Installation Source'. Double click each and change D:\ to C:\
    3. (Locate) HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version
    > Right window pane > double click 'Source Path' > change D:\ to C:\
    4. Reboot your computer
    5. Start > Run > sfc /scannow
    6. You must reinstall updates, and hotfixes now.
    7. Change your regedit settings back to D, and reboot.

These are very simplified instructions, so don't hesitate to ask any questions. I tried this on 2 computers, it worked, and I hope that it works for you as well.

Note. If your i386 folders are corrupted, or damaged you will need a clean copy of the folders.

    Good Luck!

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. First, no I do not have an i386 folder in the 'dllcache folder'. Next, I have run the dial-a-fix and I believe it has cleared up most of my problems, including the problem I was having in thread http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=84084.

However, before I did the dial-a-fix I tried to do what you suggested in your next post.

I followed your directions, however, when the sfc started running it kept asking for the original program disk so it could update the dllcache. I had to keep saying no and it would run for a few seconds keep asking. I haven't tried to run the sfc /scannow since I ran the dial-a-fix. I'm not sure I want to, since everything "appears" to be running well now. I could try again, if you think it would be beneficial.

Thanks for everyones help. This old dog has learned a lot in the process. I do have one general question which I will post in another thread so it won't be confusing to others. Believe me I do try to scan all the other threads and topics and they are very helpful. Thanks again.:) :) :)

 Looks like I may have spoke to soon. One of the problems I'd had was that in my Outlook Express, any underlined URL link would not open when I clicked on it. At the time I finished the dial-a-fix as I described in my last post, everything was working fine. Later after I had shut down and later rebooted and checked my e-mails in OE, I found that when I click on a link, it will not open the link in IE. However, if I hold down the CTRL key and click on the link, it will open IE. Maybe I have a switch turn wrong or something.

Another thing, I have Microsofts Automatic Update installed on my computer. It normally does well, however the last couple of times I reinstalled IE 6 and then updated from the Microsoft update website, the last update, Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823353), keeps coming back in the Automatic Update program. I install it as directed, and the little icon goes away but in just a minute it is back. Also, when go back to the update website and scan to see if there are any more updates need the same update is there again. The only thing I can think of to do now is to uninstall that update and then reinstall it.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

    Hi Hutchfred.

Windows Update was offering OE updates in the wrong order to Win2k SP4 and WinXP SP1 users

    1.Uninstall 'Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB897715' via Add/Remove Programs and
    reboot.

    2a. Assuming MSOE.DLL is now v6.00.2800.1409 or earlier (i.e.,
v6.00.2800.1123 or v6.00.2800.1106), install (KB)823353 manually using the
    file downloaded from
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD6A96BC-DAF0-4EAB-89B8-BD702B3E3E5D&displaylang=en

2b. Optional: Reboot and install KB887797 via
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=fda6678b-69b0-4813-9856-a1a3da675baf

    3. Reboot and (re)install (KB)897715 manually using the file downloaded from
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=89e4d8ee-4d8e-4660-a53d-28502b3d2518
Alternatively, after #1 above, check in at Windows Update and install
whatever OE Cumulative Update is now offered and reboot. Then return to
Windows Update to see if another one's now offered you.

OK, here we go. First I did as you suggested. After uninstalling KB897715 none of the MSOE.DLL files on my computer had any file versions as old as you mentioned.

    AFTER UNINSTALL
    MSOE.DLL 6.0.2800.1437 C:\ProgramFiles\Outlook Express
    msoe.dll 5.50.4927.1200 C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
    msoe.dll 6.0.2800.1506 C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download\a9c4f18c0d46d97ad6a5b4fa294bf494
    msoe.dll 6.0.2800.1437 C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache

    AFTER RE-INSTALL
    MSOE.DLL 6.0.2800.1506 C:\ProgramFiles\Outlook Express
    msoe.dll 6.0.2800.1478 C:\WINNT\$UninstallKB897715-OE6SP1-20050503.210336$
    msoe.dll 6.0.2800.1437 C:\WINNT\$UninstallKB897797-OE6SP1-20041112.131144$
    msoe.dll 5.50.4927.1200 C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
    msoe.dll 6.0.2800.1506 C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download\a9c4f18c0d46d97ad6a5b4fa294bf494
    MSOE.DLL 6.0.2800.1506 C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache

However, I still have the same problem with the links in OE.

The problem with the windows automatic update has stopped. It seems to be working ok.

Since I used dial-a-fix, I have noticed that when I boot up my computer, after the initial BIOS and startup section where you can press F8 to go to the SAFE MODE, the screen turns blue (as it should), the logo box comes up and states "Preparing Network Connections". This runs for almost 2 minutes, then it comes with loading settings, etc. as it normally did. Any ideas what is happening there? Or is this something to address in another thread?

    Hi Hutchfred,

If you changed all 3 file paths to C, and it still asked for the CD then your files are corrupted or missing. You will need a clean/new copy of the i386 folder in order to run it without the CD.

You said that you didn't have a dllcache folder, but in your last reply you listed dll's in the dllcache folder.

I'm waiting for a PM from the creator of DAF about that problem. I'll get back to you soon.

    Good day!

This was DjLizard's response to the DAF question/issue...boot.

"Not many ideas (except googling) but you can be assured that it wasn't Dial-a-fix that caused it.

    See also: http://blog.warmbrain.com/2002/Oct/2002Oct...onnections.html

It has a bunch of links and 4 solution links that might help. It seems to happen only in Windows 2000. My personal suggestion: reinstall Service Pack 4 and then all post-SP4 updates."

Also you should ask a friend/family member if you can "copy" their i386 folder from their CD. If you browse an upgrade/restore/installation CD you will find the i386 folder.

First, I did not say I didn't have a dllcache folder, I said "I do not have an i386 folder in the 'dllcache folder'" in response to your question:

"I am concerned about one thing. While I'm looking this up will you search for 'dllcache folder', and see if you have an i386 folder in there?"

Second this is the status of the registry keys you mentioned:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
    Installation Sources | REG_MULTI_SZ | C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo C:\PROGRAM.....
    ServicePackCachePath | REG_SZ | c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache
    ServicePackSourcePath | REG_SZ | c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles
    Source Path | REG_SZ | D:\

I know you didn't ask about ServicePackCachePath, I just thought I'd give you all the information. The only thing I changed before trying sfc /scannow was the Source Path which I changed to C:\.
The others I didn't change because they were already drive C:\

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version
I changed the Source Path from D:\ to C:\.

I did create a C:\i386 folder as you suggested and put all the i386 files in from the Driver Cache and from the ServicePackFiles.

I don't think it was the dial-a-fix that caused my problems, either. I was just saying that this was when I noticed some of my problems.

I will try the link you mentioned in your last posting. Thanks.
