Add/Remove Programs

Hi Fellow Geeks,
When in add/remove programs,how can I decide which ones can be deleted safely? In particular all the ones Microsoft has seen fit to add to my collection. Granted some are crirical updates and other stuff needs to be there, but I seem to have an over abundance of these things of which I have no idea of what they are let alone what they do. I have heard if you remove some of these some other programs will not function as they should. Any help will help.

Well, you can mention specific programs here and someone may be familiar with them. I suggest doing Internet searches via a Google on anything you're pondering removal of; in most cases, you'll find numerous sources of info on them.

Tagging onto Usafvets post, while a list of what you have is useful its also not useful as only you can determine if an application is useful to you, HOWEVER safe to say that if an item has a KB number after it like KB929547 (just an example as came to mind, also titles like Service Pack, Hotfix or Cumulative Update for ) that its needed, while you can remove them if you wish, its not advisable as you will loose the feature, fix or security update this patch brings and open your PC upto the items that these patches where issued to fix.

Also removing them can break your Windows install as some patches and hotfixes come in a specific order as a pre-requisite to installing another one.

Is there a reason you need to unsinstall components? Low on harddrive space? or just curious?

And, of course, you can clear the checkbox for Show updates at the top of the Add or Remove Programs panel. There's usually no need to display the updates.
