HI! Well,:confused I have two Dell machines (3000 & 1100) running XP With Service Pac 3. I installed 2 GB of memory in both. The 1100 seems fine but my Dell 3000 with two hard drives did not show any significant improvement in speed and worriesomely my newest largest Hard Drive is showing a huge increase in fragmented space according to Diskkeeper.

I have been searching to figure out it I need to reinstall the driver for the hard drive or maybe the bios driver. A little bit of knowledge could be a dangerous thing so I thought I would check with my frends here at Major Geeks.

    Thank you for your suggestings.

I wouldn't worry about fragmented space if your new drive is less than 60-70% full, Diskkeeper will take care of it just fine :). Once it get's close to 70% full, it's time to look for another drive anyway.

Staying with the 3000, how much (%) free space is on the drives and what are their sizes?

Are the 2 drives connected to the motherboard on the same IDE ribbon cable?

In Diskkeeper, does it tell you how many fragments the paging file is in?

Hi Diskeeper gives the following info:

"WD800BB-75JHCO" 72,998 MB capacity, NTFS, 52,866 MB or 72% Free Space
    "Maxtor 2R015H1" 14,286 MB capacity, FAT32, 10,930 MB or 76% Free Space

Diskeeper says "the average number of fragments per file is 1.00. On average, you have 0% excess fragments per file on this volume. This is a slightly fragmented volume."

Ah, still the three red bars are two inches each indicating fragmented files.

I was planning to install a "neat receipt" program on in with plenty of data but I am wondering if this would be a good idea.

Regarding the ribbons, I will have to open up the case tomorrow to see.

Regarding the paging file, is this information available when the advanced diskeeper is installed? Currently I have diskeeper lite. Will consider upgradeing if it will help.

    Thank you. Best Regards, Jeanie

Your free space levels are great :). Your file fragmentation levels are zero; don't worry about any free space fragmentation, this is perfectly normal - no defragger can move all the files into one block, some files are locked by Windows. There is a tool that can defrag some of these files; it works before Windows starts.

PageDefrag, download and install/run it, agree to the license, Pagedefrag will popup and will quickly scan the C drive and show you which of the locked files (swap/paging file included) are fragmented, if any are fragmented, set the button for 'defrag on next boot' and click OK.

Next boot, it will run through the defrag and fix those files up, you can see the results on screen.

That Maxtor 15GB drive is very slow, it's from an old family of drives, probably dating back about 10-15 years. I'd not expect anything short of a miracle to make much difference to the speed of it.
