I want to increase my memory from -1/2 to 2 GB. The store did not have the PC3200/400DDR memory but a PC5300 which showed on the package it can can downgrade to PC3200. Should I place the new card in the primary slot or leave the 1 GB card there and replace the 1/2 GB card?

The issue ha nothing to do with Motherboard specs. The Motherboard Asus K8V slot 754 for AMD 3200 CPU, has a primary and secondary slot. The primary currently has a 1 GigM PC3200 memory stick/card. The secondary has a 500 MB card. Since the new card is actuall, a PC5300 that can/will 'downgrade' to a PC3200, I am asking which would be better.

PC5300 is better and have that in the best and advised slot for your motherboard for best performance.

But if you are to use both PC5300 and PC3200 ram then your PC5300 will step down to being at PC3200 speed, while more is best, the speed loss maybe not so good, so try the new ram on its own and see how your PC works, then add the old ram and see how it works, then its upto you to judge if the new ram on its own is better than using both old and new.

I intend to use both. I know that the PC5300 will step down. My question was should I put the PC5300 in the primary slot vs. the PC3200!

    STOP!! :eek

PC5300 is DDR2 memory and your computer is DDR! DO NOT INSTALL THIS! They are not interchangeable, the shape is off, and you can damage your motherboard to the point of killing it if you force it in.

    Mimsy,
You are correct, PC5300 is DDR2. Never trust the Geek Squad!!!!!

    THANK YOU

I could have told you that ;)

You need PC3200 or PC2700, and nothing else. Tell them you want a full refund, and then go somewhere else, to someone who knows what they're doing. :)

I would opt for the PC3200 if possible if for no other reason than the slight speed advantage.

    Thanks, I over-looked that part. :)

funkyecat, ignore what I said about speed and go with what hrlow said. PC3200 will work better together with your old RAM anyway. :)
