Ok, I took a 120MM fan out of an apple that we scrapped (didnt work) and i FINALLY got around to buying an panaflow tail adapter so it works. Now, Ive got 2 intake fans infront, 2 exhaust in psu and 1 exhaust back case. Heres what i plan to do, i plan on putting the 120mm fan right where my CPU is, i mean cutting a whole in my side panel and putting the fan in there, since my CPU fan on the HS doesnt really do anything (suck air off it) i plan on removing the CPU heatsink fan and letting the fan suck air straight onto the CPU heatsink.

So, is this a good idea, AND what is a good method of marking the sidepanel?

I wouldn't recommend this as the air from the 120mm fan won't be going directly to the cpu but around the case, however I'd keep the current heatsink/fan and add the 120mm fan to the side panel.
Is the side panel a clear acrylic sheet or metal?

    Its black anodized metal.

i just modded my case for a fan over the cpu (80mm), turned the rear fan around blowing in (120mm), and made the 2 front fans exhaust cpu fan now at 2100 rpm's with idle temp at 38c. down from idle at 42c with processor fan at3000 rpm's :D doesnt go above 52c at full load

How did u get the side panel modified? Mines not windowed, and im having a hard time trying to figure out how to position the fan....

look at the side of the case, work out roughly where the cpu hsf is,get a cd place it on the inside of the panel, get a pencil or marker pen draw around the cd,then get a drill and drill a hole just on the inside of circle you have just drawn, next get a jigsaw put the blade through the hole and cut out the circle, next get a fan grill place it on the hole get it square and level and mark all 4 screw holes, drill them all out and mount your fan :)

yup that about covers it. all i did is mark out the fans mounting holes and a circle roughly the size of the fan in the middle. The air flow through the case is good even though i have a cheap powmax case. :)

cool, thanks! BTW, Should i put the fan by the CPU, OR should i put it by the vid card.

If its by the vid card (ive got it sitting on some PS2 cases) it cools all 8 video card DDR chips, my SouthBridge, my video card heatsink, and some of the RAM... and some Northbridge.

With the CPU, itll only cool the CPU and some extra Northbridge cooling

any chance of a pic of what you have already?might give clue as to your a=current airflow and what your options are :)

If you are prepared to take the parts out of your case this is the best config for your fans "its what I have",one top extractor is the best, followed closely by one rear extractor,if you just want to make hole in the side of your case,id put it straight above your cpu,in my experience cpu's respond much better to overclocking when cooled than video cards do.

Interesting setup... Ill definetely take a look into that..

BTW Ive got another 80mm fan i pulled out of an Apple G4 powersupply and its got a 2 pin female connector.... Time to buy a panaflow tail adaptor? Or should i just invest in another 120mm for top exhaust?

tsup to you,how much work your prepared to put into it,a top extractor is the best because it extracts all the hot air as it rises,as for the fan adapter,I'd just solder a male plug on :)

Ive got soldering skills out the wazoo... I used to race slot cars so... hehehe lots of late nights.

As for the top fan, an 80mm ought to be fine eh? Also, do you know where i can find 120mm fan grills? Ive been looking but all i can find are 80mm grills and 20 dollar 120mm fan grills, and i sure as heck aint gonna spend 20 bucks on a fan grill!

best place to check is a local computer stroe,it aint worth the shipping buying them online, they should only cost about $2,I get them for 95p in the uk :)

Its my cpu, its the stock fan, i tried turning it around but it doesnt even grab the heatsink anymore (there are no screw holes....) So im poppin that 120mm beast in there :) hehehe

Lol, that fans no longer on the CPU, i removed it and low and behold my temps are at 47C idle instead of the usual 51C with the fan... oddd.

Ive done the case mod and now the fan is blowing on the CPU, its lowered my IDLE temps to 35C.... from 45-50C... and thats with a box fan in front of it! I also purchased RAM sinks for my vid card. I got TT's pack of 8 and put one on each mem. chip. My comps runnin pretty cool now :D
