I want to try to decrease some CPU heat in my desktop. So I thought I would add a case fan to help circulate more air inside the case with hopes the added airflow would help cool the system a bit more.

My case has a spot on the rear of the case below the powersupply like most cases. However it also has a plastic vent right above the CPU.

My question is should I put the case fan in the rear or on the side right above the CPU?

If there is no where esle to situate it can you not take the vent off of the fan. if you can situate it at the side it might be advisable to having blowing in the direstion of the CPU and add a filter if you can then put an extracter fan at the rear.

    Hot air rises

So, the general rule of thumb is to have intake fans in the lower half of your case, and exhaust fans in the upper half

You should also have the same amount of air coming in as going out.

What other (if any) case fans do you have already ?

A link to your case might also be handy :)

there is none in there now. I actually am inquiring with my supplier about the motherboard as the SmartFan feature is not working properly. It is supposed to slow the fan down when not needed and speed up the fan when cpu gets warmer.

The fan runs at a constant 1200rpm. I think this is too low. I have turned off the feature and it doesn't change. Also the fan I installed is not detected. So maybe it is a motherboard problem that the fan on the cpu isn't spinning fast enough to cool the cpu. I believe it used to spin at 3000rpm.

Does that speed sound 3000rpm sound about right for a cpu fan? Does anyone else think it is a fault in the motherboard? It is under warranty still so I think sending it back won't hurt.

But I will take the advice about the case fan and put in on the side vent.
