I have a perfectly good Dell dimension running XP pro.The only drawback being the system size is not big enough for my liking.Could I please ask your opinion's of external memory add-on's.I was thinking of adding 80 to 100 gig and was curious if anyone could give me any feedback. thank's brady04939

I am all for adding a hard-drive, but I would, if possible, put in an internal hard-drive because they are faster. If you do add an external drive, try to get a drive with firewire instead of USB if you will be doing anything with video because I have heard tell of there not being enough through-put in the USB cables to support all of that data coming through. But if I were you, I would just go with a nice internal drive.

I'm not disagreeing with the previous response, but there are some good reasons for wanting an external drive.

If you want to be able to use the info on more than one computer you can just disconnect and take it with you. If you do plan to use it on more than one computer unless they all have Firewire; USB may be your best bet. Personally I believe that Dell and most other computer companies of that ilk use cheap power supplies that are not meant for running very much more equipment than they came with, so an external drive with an AC cable wouldn't tax it. I would go for the internal drive, but then I don't have a Dell; I have been told that that I have enough drives in my system that I am pushing my PSUs limits.

ps. Some of the hard drive major geeks probably didn't even look at this thread because your heading sounds like you're asking about system RAM. Changing the word memory to hard drive might get more responses
