I just added 2GB into my old Dell Dimension 4600 and I don't think I did it right. It still says 256 on the specs thing.
When I go to the scanner on Crucial it says I have 2.25 Gb.

Do I have to go in and adjust something?
    Thanks

4 GB of memory max so you are good there, possibly need to remove and reseat the RAM modules, and insure they are installed in proper slots for max performance. Read specs for memory modules in above links and insure you installed the correct type of memory too.
I assume you right click on My Computer and choose properties, or checked System in the control panel for viewing amount of RAM installed.
In any case should be a simple fix, work it through...

Well I've taken out the cards and put them in about three times and they still don't show up in the system specs. Normally it would tell you the increase ,but nothing.

    I'm about to give up.

I've got a Dell Dimension 4600i and had no problems adding 2 sticks of 1 GB each. There were already 2x256 MB sticks installed in slot 1 and 3. Therefore I added the additional RAM in slot 2 and 4. The RAM needs to be installed in pairs.
Did you get the correct sticks for your computer? Did you scan with Crucial.com prior to getting your new stick(s)?

Called up Dell and they helped for free.
My computer is 5 years old .
I think that's refreshing these days when everyone wants to charge for the least bit of help.

The problem was not me incorrectly installing the boards, it was in the operating system.
Something in there wasn't turned on or off.
Sorry that I can't be more specific for anyone trying to gain knowledge from my experience.
Once again, thanks to all that replied to help.Be well.
