looking for a reliable site to get addtional memory . I have a del, windows, vista home basic, AMD Sempron, Nivida GetForce 6150 LE with 1gb installed. Would like to add upto 20 GB maybe, though I cannot found out how much I can install.

There are no computer shops in my area, so this will probably be the only way I can locate what I need

    HI java

plodr's link is good (just click Memory (RAM) and run the scan my system link) and I sadly highly doubt you will get 20GB RAM to work in an OEM PC and even less if you are running Vista Home Basic as its limit is 4GB RAM on 32bit and 6GB RAM on 64bit versions,

you should be able to get to 4GB (but note that some hardware can limit the amount of usable ram on 32bot Windows to around 3.5GB), for large amounts of ram you would need 64bit Windows version and compatible hardware.

list is HERE for ram limits on Windows versions.

Just as an additional question we are taking RAM here and not Hard Drive space?

The rule of thumb is generally XP 1gb, Vista & 7 2gb-3gb, 8 4gb or as much as your machine will take. It has gotten ridiculous in how Microsoft has made their Operating systems need more RAM, in order to operate.

We maxed out our son's Toshiba to 16gb, due to I did not want to hear him later on state that 8 was crawling with just putting 8gb in there. Plus the price was cheap enough that I could not pass it up, for what Crucial was offering.

Also if you can, throw in a SSD in place of the Platter drive as the main drive, and it will act like a better machine also.

Go to Crucial.com, run the memory adviser and it will tell you max RAM your machine can take. As for adding 20gb, waste with Vista Home Basic, since the max it will even recognize is 3gb. Only if you were running a Server, or doing very intense photo/movie editing, or program compiling, do you even need that much.

Even on my son's machine, it has 64bit Win8, and at even 16gb, the machine only uses 2gb at a given time, but he is using it for a lot more than just watching movies, or browsing the Internet, so he needed the larger amount of RAM that his machine could take, and the OS will utilize that much RAM.

Unless you're doing things on the computer that require more memory. My Win 7 computers start at 8GB, but then they are primarily used for gaming. ;)

Or at least a faster one. SSDs are awesome. :strong

They can be waste of money in the wrong machines though, or for the wrong tasks. OP, if you are interested in SSDs, I suggest starting a new thread about them, and we'll have that discussion there. :)
