    Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 8300, P4, 60 G HD and 512 and am running Win XP Home.

I'm having a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader in the sense that whenever I try to open a .pdf file, it tries to load, but then freezes. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the 6.0.1 version, then uninstilling the previous 5.0 version and starting from scratch, and the same thing happens.

Any ideas what might be going on? If I've left out pertinent info, please let me know :)

    Thanks in advance
    Janet/Shihlhasa

One fix for this quirk is to delete the files in the temp folder

Delete all temporary files from the following folders:

    Windows\Temp
Documents and Settings\[user profile]\Local Settings\Temp *may need to unhide files if using XP*

quick question are the pdf's you are trying to open on your PC or from the web, if the web then Acrobat is notorious in slow opening of these even if your on broadband.

Halo - Thank you very much! It worked!! What was happening there? Or shouldn't I ask ;)

FYI, the .pdf files were on the web and I know they can slowish, but to the point of freezing?! Anyway, as I said, all seems well at the moment.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the quick response.

    shilhasa,

Take a close look at this thread, for a quick and EASY speeder-upper for the Adobe Reader startup. I wrote it a while back, but it still works beautifully to cut a buncha seconds off the load-time.

Hope it helps you get Adobe up and running FASTER!

    Glad it worked Janet ;)

as to the reason, well as the temp folders are where some programs store temporary files when installing and programs and or the OS can become confused. So occasionally its worth deleting the temporary folders especially when installing alot of programs.

Following on from the Wizy ones great info *thumbs up* on the plugins that do slow Acrobat down it looks as if someones taken this affliction up and produced a small GUI app to help... I tried it on my full version and it works great for those of you who dont like getting dirty, it also has a restore function and gives you some info on what the plugins actually do!

I'm afraid to tell you how many were in there.....

    Okay...deep breath.....65,000+

I thought I was taking care of all that when I did the "Delete Files" under Internet Options...guess not, huh?!

I actually managed to successfully do as WiseWiz suggested in the link that was provided and what a HUUUUUUGE difference indeed! Didn't get my hands terribly dirty either ;)

Thanks again for the help. Maybe someday soon I'll get brave and have you folks help me figure out why my startup is sooooooooooooooo slow. I turn it on in the a.m., go the bathroom, make coffee, feed the dog, get the paper and it's still only just starting to load the desktop......

    Regards,
    Janet/Shihlhasa

Janet, I think your 65k is a record for me, but I really REGULARLY see people with 12k to 20k "objects" in their Temp folders, and they seem quite surprised when their computers run a LOT better once we've cleaned that mess out. (Don't get us started on the people who don't know you have to empty the Recycle Bin, though.)

Glad you got Adobe to speed up and glad you LEARNED some good stuff while you were here.

Yes. Come on back when you're ready and let us try to help you get that machine going in the morning. Anything over a minute to boot means something's WRONG, and when something's wrong, MG is the place to take that problem.

You've proved yourself very capable now that you've "fixed" Adobe on your own, so I'm confident that we can get your machine going with your help.

    Wow, nifty!

Shouldn't this be on MG, though? :D
