Adobe 7 Reader freezes computer

Windows XP Home Windows NT 5.1 Build 2600, free Zonealarm firewall, AVG Virus. Use Firefox browser and IE.

I removed the previous Adobe version from the Add/Remove Programs and installed the above version when prompted to update. When trying to use the Reader, the document(s) don't download for reading and it freezes my computer.

I've removed and re-installed it several times and it still doesn't work in both browsers. I tried version 6 and it still doesn't work.

I'm a computer illiterate and need your help please. Thank you.

 

Additionally, Microsoft error reporting gives me this report:

"Adobe Reader 7.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Microsoft tells me that they don't know the problem either.

Can someone help me please?

 

If all you want is a simple no frills PDF reader, uninstall Adobe and try this free download from Foxit. It won't give you any problems.

Yes, just make it your default reader and it will work with anything.

 

May I ask you HOW do I make foxit reader my default reader?? Sorry, please understand that I'm NOT geeky at all!!

 

Foxit does not have to be installed, so just place the downloaded folder on C:\ .
Open Foxit and click on Help at top of page, then tick the default reader box. (It may already be ticked) There is no Firefox plugin for the free version of Foxit, but you can open or save a PDF file within the browser by using the Firefox download popup when it appears.
