Help Me Please, if you can

Have previously encountered many problems w/Adobe Acrobat (reader) v.5 - thought they might be rectified if I updated to a later version.
Many websites I've visited claim: I think it's the Acrobat ? "Flash" Reader version is req'd.!

Can anyone tell me what the diff. is &/or what I should be utilizing w/out mega problems!!((

I'm pinching pennies on disability and therefore must take advantage of 'freebie downloads'!!
Any light you can shed on this wld. be greatfully appreciated.

    Thank You -
    Madigan

PS: Running XP .... again, T.Y.

You may be interested in this no-nonsense version of Acrobat. Its called Foxit Reader: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

A rare non-Adobe PDF reader for Windows. Very slim, effective, full-featured and free!
The PDF creators and editors aren't free though!

    Regards....

    I agree with nitecrawler.

Foxit Reader is the best. Light on resources, opens quick.

Got rid of Adobe Reader, too many problems, resource hog.

theefool, Kniht & nightcrawler - Firstly, "Thank You" for your info. & input. So sorry for not getting back, but have had nothing but software probs. all wk. end - Aaaah, a mess. Think most is back to some semblance of "disorder"!) Only "just" managed the site to see your additional posts.

*** Currently, have Adobe Reader 7.0 downloaded & running. PROB. is I cannot input/fill-in the PDF forms when I've downloaded them w/Adobe OR w/IE.. s/be "interactive" forms. ****
(do a meager (huge on paper) trust tax rtn. for a nephew ... had been sick & completely forgot to order forms! Thought Cda Customs & Rev. Agency website s/have interactive PDF forms)
Any ideas .... to keep me from the soup, for late filing?

*** Intend to try Foxit Reader (sounds great), dependant upon your recommendations:

    - can't rmbr. indications (read Fri.) on the PDF, but w/have to start using these on a variety of health & drs. websites-lengthy & m/be downloaded.

    - FORGOT to mention, will eventually have to use "Dragon Naturally Speaking" (voice recognition) software...(rmbr. reading something about microphones &/or adaptation on Adobe site & probably why I downloaded Reader 7.)

    - run XP, 512 memory.
    ********

Wondering if Adobe Reader 7 s/be scraped or c/be utilized for tax filing this yr.? Can Foxit handle the PDF forms better .... & DNS (voice recog.) software?

Appreciate, it's a TALL ORDER! Sorry to be so long winded - exhausted & hope the above makes some sense.

Sincere Thanks to ALL for ALL -
    Jane

PS: Kniht, I apologize if I've mislead you re: recomendation of Shockwave. Should have mentioned it wasn't for watching movies, working w/graphics stuff, etc... Again, so sorry - didn't intend to waste your time.

Will it matter if I have both Foxit and Adobe on my computer? Will one scramble to be the default? How do I get Foxit to take over?

    Hello abri,
No you can have them both as I did initially whenI put in Foxit. Thing is you don't need Adobe reader after that - it's a real resource hog. Get rid of it and use Foxit as I did
    Cheers

    Madigan,

No apology necessary. It's never a waste of my time to try to help someone whether it be in this forum or life itself.

As far as being mislead, you did not mislead me, I misunderstood. Am still picking shrapnel out of my body from the Nam war and I think it sometimes interferes with my common sense.

Hope you get things worked out. There are a lot of good folk in this forum that not only have given me a lot of help, but I have learned at lot from them also.

I know you'll like Foxit reader, wait till you see how fast it opens and how little resources it uses.

    Morning Robert & abri -
Thank you .... wasn't too worried about having both Foxit (not yet downloaded) & Adobe Reader on the computer at the same time, but wondering:

    - How or if it was possible to "type/fill-in" the already downloaded forms: with Adobe Reader 7 or IE?
(to allow me to do the tax rtns. ... & hopefully alleviate the immediate time-crunch I'm in)

All that been said ... does Foxit support/allow:

    - filling-in/typing of downloaded PDF,
    - Dragon Naturally Speaking (voice recognition) software.

Appreciate any light you might shed on this.

    Thanks again -
    Jane

Morning Kniht - Thank you for your kind words. This is a super site, great people & can't believe the fast response times ... Wow am I impressed.

Currently have the Adobe Reader 7 (downloaded/running now) but can't seem to fill-in the downloaded PDF info/forms! Any way of doing this w/Adobe or in EI?

Do you know if Foxit supports filling-in downloaded PDF .... & DNS (voice recog.) software?

Again, t.y. for your kind words & help.

    Cheers - Jane

PS: not on-line again until tmrw.... playing catch-up w/drs. app'ts.

um just out of curiousity how much cpu or whatever does adobe use and how much does foxit use

Foxit Reader v2 only takes 3.60MB.
Adobe Reader v7.0.8 (just erased it), but in visiting the download site they claim it's 27.7MB.

Still attempting to "learn" my newly acquired Foxit Program ... aaaah, w/my lack of knowledge ) but must admit I'm really enjoying the process.

Thank you MajorGeeks for allowing me the opportunity.... "great site"!!

    Cheers - Jane

Foxit Reader, at least on my PC, consumes at most 10mb, Adobe at the least, again on my PC, 35mb.

But, the only issue I have with foxit. Is the following:

printing heavy graphical pdf's. Adobe prints it out correctly, foxit doesn't. BUT, I haven't tried foxit 2.0. Since windows Vista and HP printers don't play nicely in the playground. :)
