Adobe Creative Suite, Free Alternatives?

A family member asked me about free alternative / replacement software for Adobe Creative Suite. I'm guessing that they want to create, edit, and view various types of documents or files. Since I don't own it or use it, and except for perhaps thinking it includes Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop, I'm not sure what's in it or what it's used for.

I previously read an article somewhere that listed free alternative software for this suite of applications. Of course, I don't remember where I read it.

Any help in providing software suggestions or in pointing me in the right direction is appreciated.
