Did you really need to upgrade to X? Do you need Adobe Reader, or would an alternative such as Foxit Reader work? I've been using Foxit for a year or so on my Windows 7 system and am pleased with it. It's a tabbed reader, meaning you can have multiple PDF documents open in the same Foxit window. And, I can print any file (Word, Excel, etc.) to a PDF file.

If you decide to try Foxit, please be very aware that this free software may install a toolbar. I don't use Foxit anymore due to that. Believe you have to untick all the boxes when you install it. Even so, you may want to look in Add/Remove Programs to see if the toolbar is still there and remove it.

Been awhile since I installed Foxit Reader but, yes, I believe it's the Ask toolbar that's bundled with it. But, no big deal, in my opinion. I believe the option to unselect it is displayed during the installation of the reader. And, as oma said, if you happen to overlook that and the toolbar gets installed, you can remove it via Add/Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Win 7/Vista).

My impression is that this type of bundling is slowly becoming more common in the freeware arena and I don't necessarily view that as a negative point against the software developer. After all, if you're getting the software, i.e. the main program, for free, then why complain about the developer potentially getting some compensation from advertising for another product. I don't see it a major issue as long as the bundled toolbar (or whatever was bundled) can be removed through the normal procedure for removing programs if you want to remove it.

I agree with you usafveteran as far as some sort of compensation for the writers of freeware programs. I have no problem with any program giving you the option of opting out of something bundled with it; early on, Foxit didn't give you that option. That was my beef with them. You didn't know you had "extras" until after the installation. I'm glad to learn that's changed, but then again so has my choice of PDF Reader. :)

And frankly, there's nothing worse than the Ask Toolbar to include with a program.

Well, solaris89, I share your sentiments regarding the Ask toolbar. I recently removed a Weather tool from a weather website because, when I was alerted to an update to the program and proceeded to install the update, I could not successfully elect not to install the ... guess what ... Ask toolbar. So, even though I could have gone ahead and updated the weather program and then uninstalled that Ask toolbar, I was annoyed by not being able to opt out of installing the toolbar during the weather program upgrade and decided to completely remove that weather program. I now have a weather gadget (Windows 7) installed.

But, as far as I know, Foxit does let the user opt-out during installation. However, I just learned there's another way to install Foxit Reader which does not include any bundled software. By going to http://foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ and selecting the msi download package (under Package type) instead of the exe file, you get an installation of Foxit which has no other software bundled with it. I learned about this at http://www.techsupportalert.com/fre...sneaky-adware-bundling-with-foxit-reader.html

The download link in my first reply was majorgeeks.com, which is the exe file. As far as I know, the msi installer is not available from majorgeeks.com.

Excellent tip on the bundle-free version. As I mentioned, earlier versions of Foxit did not give you the option to opt-out, that was my beef with the program.

I really feel for those folks inclined to be "click-happy" when installing a program; the surprises can cause real problems.
