On opening a file with Adobe Reader 7.08 that I received from a friend via email, I received the error message "There were too many arguments." I closed the error box and received only a partial display of the document. The thumbnail image seen from the page tab shows the drawing. I tried printing the file and received a blank page.

The thread at http://marc2.theaimsgroup.com/?l=fop-dev&m=110623093921268&w=2 says that the problem might be that I am running an old version of FOP - as this bug error seems to be exactly
    that: http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=9054

I've tried updating my Adobe Reader 7.08, which seem to work until I again use the "Check for updates now ..." button from the Adobe Reader help pull down menu. After updating my Adobe Reader 7.08, the "Check for updates now ..." button shows the same files that I just updated Adobe with.

Any thoughts on how I might correct the problem?

You might try Foxit Reader. Its free, small (Adobe 7+ is BLOOOOATED), and I haven't seen any compatibility issues between PDFs made on different versions, as I have with the Adobe reader.

Or, if you're stuck on Adobe, the first thing I would try is re-installing it.
