    Hello,

I just downloaded Adobe Reader 9.1 to replace Adobe Reader 5.0.5, so that I can view newer pdf formats. However, I find that I can no longer open any pdf files by just double clicking, as the icon I see is that white page with the windows symbol in the middle. I tried going 'open with' and 'choose program', then when that menu pops up, I click the check box on the bottom that says 'always use this program to open these files'. However, after I close out of the pdf file, I still cannot just double click to open. The icon remains as the blank page with the windows symbol in the middle. I have to go through the "long" process of right clicking, open with, and then choosing Adobe Reader 9.1.

Is there a way to bypass this process so that I can just double click to open?

If you haven't already uninstalled Adobe 5.0.5, do so. It might not be a bad idea to uninstall Adobe 9.1 first, then reboot, then uninstall v5.0.5, and reboot again, then install v9.1. If PDFs still won't open when you double-click 'em, right click a PDF and select 'Open with...'. You can then use the 'Choose Program' option, and browse to the Adobe EXE file (the default path would be C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe ). Then every time you double click a PDF, it will open with Adobe 9.1.

    :-D

Well, I have Win 2000 SP4. Old, but still supported as stated on the Adobe site.

When I installed Adobe 9.1, I had 5.0.5 still installed. Then, I uninstalled 5.0.5. I shall try uninstalling 9.1 and reinstalling it again.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled the program. I'm still experiencing the same thing. I cannot directly access pdf file by just double clicking the file. I have to right click and go through the 'Open With' option. I have already chosen Adobe Reader 9.1 as the program to 'always use' as default for pdf. Any advice on how to fix this? I might try downloading lower versions of Adobe Reader (that supports my OS), but would appreciate any advice on how to rectify this problem. Thanks guys.

Try this. Hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl & Alt) and the E key at the same time. Should bring up Windows Explorer. (If that doesn't work, just open up any folder, or double click My Computer, etc.)

    Select Tools
    Folder Options
    File Types

Under the Extensions column, find PDF and select it.

Under Details for 'PDF' Extension it should say something like:
    'Opens with: Adobe Reader 9'

If so, click on the Advanced button.
Another window will pop up. Make sure under Actions: it says Open.

If under Details for 'PDF' extension, it does not have:
    'Opens with: Adobe Reader 9'
You'll need to make it so by selecting the Change button.
Once the change button opens up, you'll see the 'Open With' window (or smiliar) that you used in your previous attempts to make it 'open with'. Find the Adobe Reader 9 program, select it, and down towards the bottom, make sure the box to the right of 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' is checked.
    Click OK.

Once you tried all of that, reply with your results.

Hey MickeyRoush, thanks for your reply. I followed your procedure and got into the File Types. Under the extension 'PDF', it does 'Opens with: Adobe Reader 9.1' However, I do not see the Advanced button. All I see is the 'Change' beside the 'Opens with' and under change, there's a 'Restore' button.

In any case, I hit 'Restore', and sure enough, the pdf icon reappears and now I can double click and open the pdf files properly. Many thanks!
