    Greetings :major

Heard the new version of Adobe X 10 had some problems last week. Can anyone please advise - is the new version 10.0.01 safe now?

    Much appreciated!:)

    Hi

What issues did it have, as if you keep it up to date then its fine, I've had x 10 installed from when it was released and just update it if and when. I have 10.0.01 installed now and not application glitches, but if your talking about application security issues, then sadly no app is really 100% safe, although Adobe Reader is one popular ones that is targeted for exploits all the time.

But if you are worried about Acrobat Reader then try FoxIT as an alternative.

Well I do not know if it is Adobe X the culprit but I try Foxit too and both had the same problem when I ask to print a page both said that found a problem and needed to close. And I still looking for a way to fix this...:(

    AMEN!!!

Although Adobe, Microsoft, etc. do a relatively good job of catching and fixing loopholes hackers find, it's usually a reactive (not proactive) process. Until a hacker finds (and exploits) a weakness in software it won't be fixed. It often takes days for the update ("fix") to be released, giving malware a--holes plenty of time to find thousands of victims.

There is no substitute for using common sense when deciding to open unknown or suspicious e-mails, documents or web links. I try to explain this to my clients; however you'd be surprised how many people mistakenly think a .pdf document opened with Adobe or a search result from Yahoo is automatically "safe" based on the Adobe, Yahoo, etc. name.

Contact Foxit support. They are excellent. I had to email support in January when my 5 computers had a problem. Support was able to quickly get 4 of them working. The 5th one took more troubleshooting but the support gal stuck with me for a week until it worked perfectly. She gave me links to downloads, showed me screenshots and explained step by step what I needed to do. When it didn't work, she provided additional help.

    Greetings DavidGP & All:)

Thank you for all your feedback. I am just recovering (about ten days now) from having my system utterly compromised and reloading everything back on. Hence I am fearful (wish I had five PCs - good for you;)).... of everything. Read on a thread with Kestrel13! (a very popular :majormalware fighter) that the Adobe Reader X did in fact have a breach in its code around April 12. Anyone who loaded in at that time had some problems. Before I re-load just wanted to know if the patch worked. I do appreciate all the comments. Yes.... nothing is guaranteed.

    GMN863 - good luck on a repair

PS: DavidGP - going to the wedding?
    :)

    Hi snapper

As far as I know Reader X is ok, as per HERE but if you had good PC security already and had patched Windows and Adobe Acrobat up then you should be fine.

As to the patch working, well anyone's guess as security of an application is always ongoing as the software developers will fix an issue, only for the criminals to find a new loophole, its a cat and mouse thing.

hahahah on wedding, sadly not, didn't have a tux! :(

I have a different PDF editor than Adobe, it's Infix pdf editor that is as good as acrobat (if not better security-wise) and cheaper.

If you are concerned about automatically patching software security flaws, consider downloading and installing Secunia Personal Software Inspector (free):

    http://majorgeeks.com/Secunia_Personal_Software_Inspector_PSI_d6030.html

From the Major Geeks download page:

The Secunia PSI is a free security tool designed with the sole purpose of helping you secure your computer against vulnerabilities in programs.

98 out of 100 PCs have 1 or more insecure programs installed! Download the free Secunia PSI and check your PC for insecure programs exposing you to security threats!

    VULNERABLE ?
Did you know that many of the hacker attacks and security threats today exploit software vulnerabilities and code flaws?

    UPDATED ?
Keeping your PC and, especially, your third-party programs updated requires you to search the Internet for updates and patches on a regular basis - for all the programs installed on your PC. (Secunia does this automatically; however it will manually prompt you before it installs an update)

    WHATS ON YOUR PC ?
The typical user has 30-60 programs installed. Do you know which programs you have installed? Do you know which programs expose you to security threats?

    SECURE ?
Is your PC secure? Do you have all the latest security updates and patches?

    PROTECT YOURSELF !
Security patches are usually free and available for download from the program vendors. Let the Secunia PSI pinpoint exactly which patches you need to secure your PC.

I have it do an automatic scan once a week. In addition to fixing Adobe issues, it has caught several critical Microsoft issues that Windows Update missed.

Aside from any security issues, I tried version 10 on my laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium) and found it sluggish on that computer. I removed it and installed Adobe Reader 9.4.
