    Hi. Jason here with the...
Acer Aspire 5050 running Vista OS..

Is there another alternative program for viewing flash on YouTube? I just got done cutting out all Adobe products on this computer, and YouTube was asking me to download Adobe Flash Player. I found clicktoflash.c. But, that was on a Mac.

Is anyone developing a Windows version of a video format selection tool for links asking for Adobe?

    Thank you very much! Jason

PS. PS. Maybe one that can work with QuickTime and download them too?

    Edit: Nice one satrow. ;)

I don't think so. alternativeTo/Flash has some suggestions but I don't think any will help unless you put the link to the video into VLC Player.

    Open VLC
    VLC Menu
    Open Media
    Open Network
    Paste Url
    Play

    OK! MayDay!

I actually read the posts last night and haven't had time to respond. (Thank you by the way)

This morning I decided to go ahead and download IE9. It almost installed but asked for an update from MS. (servicepack1?) I went ahead and began the update and it said it would be an hour or so for the process. I clicked OK and the 1st phase of the update began and completed asking to restart to continue the rest of the update. I clicked OK and walked away. I came back about 15 minutes later and the whole screen was black and there were a bunch of files being displayed on a line about center on the screen, one after another in rapid succession. It seemed like it was doing its business OK so I walked away for 30 minutes. When I got back it seemed like it was hung up on this file, "!!0Xc01a001d!!37474/98908(\Registry\Machine\Components\DerivedData...)

This line was blinking erratically. Does this mean its thinking about that file and needs to complete the thinking process no matter how long? Should I stop, force quit, reboot, and try all over again (which I almost already did but wanted to check with yall first)?

    Thank you very much! Jason

PS I'm at the public library making this correspondence. The update could be done back at the house for all I know. I'm a good hour away. (I told mom not to touch it right now.)

PSPS Yes, I agree with the previous posts. I ended up finishing my research a little more thoroughly last night after my initial inquiry, and found FVD Suite. Are they MajorGeek approved? Its actually more like what I wanted, the ability to download h264 without Adobe. But, I'm still waiting on their response as to whether I'm actually downloading h264 or simply renaming the file with the (false) extension of .264. But, ultimately, if I want to enjoy the internet live like normal, I need to get this HTML5 going. (So as not to have to download the whole file and open it in another program) I could copy the video to my thumb drive, and bring it over to my computer, and open it with avidmux and see for myself the info for the file. (But my mom's computer is hung up on this MS Servicepack update. LOL)

PS. I'm here at the library checking my gmail and the first thing that happens is a white screen pops up asking me if I want to change the look of gmail. (H*ll No!) But, there wasn't an option for no. So, I went along with it. Did I just get hijacked? Now, the reply box is gone, the reply link has no response, and there is no link for a support contact. I googled, "gmail support contact" but it only produced hundreds of questions, I guess one of which was supposed to pertain to my inquiry. Why wouldn't gmail formally ask me in a gmail? Why would this question just spring on me out of nowhere? Is this how they operate now? With pop ups and no way to correspond to a tech? Or was I simply hijacked by an imposter google agent who gives people at the public library the runaround? Just curious. Jason LOL

    OK. Afterlunchtime now.

I went back, found it was still stuck on said file name, forced power off, rebooted, and only two options came up, "Start Windows Normally" or with autocorrect or something. Normally there are about 4 or 5 options. & it said, "(recommended)" by it. So, I chose that route and it began the process of autocorrecting itself to a restore point. (However, I'm not sure, in the days of Vista, it didn't give an option for the time and date of all the restore points. My Windows7 computer, completely "DeInterNetted" and documented on HowTo's "ExcessHDDActivity", which by the way is still seamlessly & faithfully booting at 21 seconds, displays a handful of points to choose from.)

I felt it would be best to go that route, ate lunch, and its still restoring, long enough for me to come back down here to the public library. I figure it should have resolved itself by the time I have this brief window to consult with you guys. My only question this time is, will it be a restore point from when I was in the middle of that last virus? LOL

Time for you to revisit the Read & Run me Jason :(, something's not right there.

The whole point about HTML5 is that it's native to any good, recent browser, no plugins required. Firefox, Chrome, Opera ... it does require the 'other side' to play ball though and you may need to opt-in to it. Only (some) videos uploaded in the last 18 months or so are likely to be HTML5 compatible - it's pretty new but probably the way things ought to be moving.

If i can't boot to safe mode is there any chance of saving a folder that was on the desktop? (Before I install Win7)

If the startup repair goes past 6 hours, is it beyond itself to repair? I can hear the clicking in the machine up to a point then just sounds like the fan is on.

Pointing me to a 2 month old thread is no proof your machine is currently clean.

The thread also shows that you are currently "ON 30 DAYS HOLIDAY", I suggest you revisit the reasons for that over there - READ and try to UNDERSTAND why. Once you have a grasp of that, return to read this thread (and any others you may have created or added to here) very carefully please.

Oh no prob. I learned my lesson well. I forgot about posting links. I wanted to share something i was excited about in return for having been helped out of a tight situation. I am faithfully waiting the 30 days. I also apologized through the contact. The link for all i know, could have been where I originally got that virus.

I appreciate all the help. I'm prepared to give you guys 30 if that carries through website linkage. I was providing evidence of my ability to "Cut the fat" out of Win 7 to turn a laptop into a workstation. That was on my Toshiba. My mom's Acer (that crashed due to residual anomolies conflicting with the Vista SP1 upgrade), is the one we've been going over.

OK Thank you very much! Jason

Hi. Jason here. Just wondering if I've burned any bridges here. I'm pretty sure referencing a safe link, so long as it pertains to helpful computer knowledge, is OK.

My mom's computer has been trying to restore for 16 hours. I tried to make HTML5 become a reality. Its ironic. I fixed it and got a holiday, but crashed updating at MS's site. LOL I have no more questions. Its not your guys fault. I would share a link i am very excited about but i now know not to post any noncomputer related links.

I just want to thank you guys for taking the time to help a brother out and provide what i have learned concerning cutting the fat out of Win7. I was volunteering my skills hoping i would have gotten a response before my brief library computer access expired.

If i can be of assistance let me know. Thank you very much! Jason

    PS Are we good?

PSPS I know what to do, install Win7 OS. This case is resolved. God Bless.
