Ads everywhere!

I don't know if everyone is having this problem or just me, but it seems that everytime I click on a button a full-screen ad appears. Pop-ups are turned off, but these don't appear to be pop-ups. One jumped up when I clicked on this text box. They appear all the time, everywhere. It's driving me crazy. Especially annoying is the ad that constantly tells me I have to update Flash player when I know I don't need to.
Is there anything I can do about these ads?

Not only that, although perhaps related, Mozilla and Chrome are both running SLOW relative to what they used to be. I've run my anti-spyware program (Spybot Search and Destroy), my anti-virus (Avast!) and my registry clean-up to no avail. May be it's all the ads...

Get AdBlockPlus for Mozilla FF. http://adblockplus.org/en/firefox
I added two filter subscriptions. I'm in the US so you might need something different in another country.
The subscriptions are: Easylist and Fanboy's Adblock List.
On an XP computer I also have EasyPrivacy.
