    Can you help 'major attitude'

I have a problem with my IE browser where I cannot surf without being redirected to the following sites (Ads234.com and Netspry.com), before it goes to the site I requested. I then tried to restrict these sites but I could not surf at all (i.e. kept on getting the blank screen in my browser).

I have completed the tasks in your tutorial and a total of 11 files were cleaned (cannot remember what files exactly, but they were various spyware bugs).

I think I have to now use 'hijack this'. As I am not that computer literate, would you be able to help me investigate the log files please.

    Cheers!

    Obenga
P.s. I'm now using Mozzilla Firefox but I need to fix this problem so I can use IE explorer for certain things (like accessing my work server)

'Major attitude' - thanks for your quick response. Here's my HJT log file (saved as a text file)

    Cheers!

Since MA is not around right now, I'll jump in.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled and system restore is disable.

Please bring up Task Manager by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and click the Processes tab. Find the below processes and End them (if found):
    UoUyxO.exe
    3ePz.exe
    AutoUpdate.exe

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-abc
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-abc
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-abc
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-abc
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Freeserve

Now boot in safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\takome\Local Settings\Temp\L.dll
    C:\documents and settings\nosey\local settings\temp\UoUyxO.exe
    C:\documents and settings\nosey\local settings\temp\3ePz.exe

    Chaslang,
Thanks for jumping in there and helping with this problem. I've completed all your tasks and run IE for a few days - All seems well!

I thought I'd run HJT again - seems clean to me. As I'm not an expert, could you run your eyes over the log file for me please.

    Appreciate your help!

    Obenga,

You have a nice clean log now! Just one note for future reference. Before scanning with HijackThis and especially before using the Fix button in HijackThis, always exit ALL browser sessions. You had
C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Mozilla.exe running when you scanned.

    Virus Check

    Chaslang / MA.

Could I bother you guys again please to check if there are any viruses listed in my HJT log text file . I've just done a routine virus check on my pc, but I'm especially suspicious of the 'services.exe' file listed in the attached HJT log text file.

    Regards,
    Obenga

    Re: Virus Check

That's a normal Windows system process.

You are still forgetting to shutdown C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Mozilla.exe

    before scanning with HJT.

  11. obenga

    obenga Private E-2

I noticed that - 'C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Mozilla.exe', but I always shut down my browser before running HJT...should I be ending the process in task manager aswell ?

A friend of mine had a virus disguised as 'services.exe' - I looked it up on the symnatec web site which said that a virus called 'W32.Randex.R' copies itself to '%System%\service.exe'.
They may be two different things as it hasn't got an 's' at the end of it.

  12. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes, W32.Randex.R will copy itself to either one of these three files:
    %System%\service.exe
    %System%\svhost.exe
    %System%\pointer32.exe

But you have to be careful here with similar named valid files. The below are valid windows processes:
    %System%\services.exe
    %System%\svchost.exe

As far as Mozilla.exe is concerned, what is it that they are loading at startup (I don't use Mozilla) and why is it necessary. You can see the O4 line in your HJT log where they load at startup. When you open a Mozilla browser window does it add another 'C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Mozilla.exe' line to your HJT log.

    Refering to your last reply...

"When you open a true Mozilla browser window does it add another 'C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Mozilla.exe' line to your HJT log? Or does it add something different"

...Are you suggesting thet I should run HJT with the mozilla browser open to check ?

I use the 'mozilla firefox' browser now, so I think I'll remove the 'mozilla' browser from my system to avoid confusion and unneccesary ram usage.

Thanks for your help Chaslang - I'm slowly starting to learn my way around my system.

Okay! Good idea. Firefox will show up as Firefox.exe. Remember to shut it down too if you ever need to post a HijackThis log again.

If you have not look at the below thread yet, please do. You may find it useful.
