so i have an ADSL modem supplied by my carrier, and it sucks, which is an understatement. it drops connection every fifteen minutes for a few minutes, and it completely a piece of junk, this is the third one i have had, and they all break down to this status within 6 months. howevery, since they are so crappy, my carrier is transferring ownership of these modems to its customers, forcing us to buy a new one from them for $180 if we need it.

can i buy an ADSL modem on ebay or something and just swap it out? i know the login username/password and all that stuff, i can log into my current modem and grab all the information. will just transferring that to another ADSL modem work? or am i overlookign something

    thanks!

not allways, different dsl providers use different vp/vc info. Some use pppoe, some pppoa. Your best bet is to ask your providor about any compitable modems your may be interested in before buying.

Colemaguy's right, my bad. You do have to make sure the modem is compatible with the protocols and settings you need to use.

i cant talk to my carrier about compatibility, they refuse to help me other then "hey! buy ours! its cheap! only $180!" and its a crappy piece of hardware from 2002 (according to the copyright date).

i know it uses PPPoE and its got like ATM VC or something (it says AAL5-0?)
im kinda on my own on this one, so if you know which settings in particular i should be checking for compatibility with, please let me know

The only why to get that info is to contact your isp or find it in your modem? If your having issues with the tech support, ask to speak to a supervisor or someone higher. Theres no reasont they shouldn't/wouldn't give you this info. In any case post your isp name and modem type and we can try to find it. But its much simpler to just call the isp and see what modem they recommend. Also something to consider, you may loose your tech support complety by buying a modem from a place other then them, least thats how we opperated. As far as the date, old doesn't always equal bad, do keep that in mind.

i've asked to speak to a supervisor, and even spoke to the owner, still to no avail. they told me if i dont like the one they gave me, to buy a new one or choose another company (there is no other option, im in a rural area for college). its the only broadband around. and im not worried about tech support. but anyway i foudn out the username/password to log in to my modem and i can give you some info on it if you think you can help me find a compatible one.

Yes the name of the company that provides your dsl, i can't even begin to guess your vpvc and can't find clear instructions on your modem to see if its in there. The "AAL5-0?)" thing isn't the vp vc, should be two numbers like 0/35.

my dsl provider is delhi telephone company, in new york

it says VPI/VCI is 0/35, is that the vp vc number you needed?

ok now we are golden, yes you need to find a ppoe Capable dsl modem. If your up for ebay, i am familer with a series called speedstream and you want either the 4200 or 5200 both are excellant. Good luck.

Doubt it is a modem issue. Probably more of a filter or line issue, then anything.

Meh, but he asked about replacing his modem.

i thought it to be a line issue at first too, but everytime they replace the modem it works flawlessly, but now they refuse to replace it for free and wanna charge me, so i wanna get a decent modem that im sure wont crap out...or at least i have more faith in then this thing.

Replacing the modem, is not going to solve the line issues. I would start by hooking the modem directly to the NID outside where the test jack is. If the same problem still comes up, then it is between the house and the C/O.

But if is works great for months, and then stops, a new modem solves the issue, i highly doubt its a line issue.

It can still be a line issue, and appear to be a "Clean" line with the new modem. It also comes down to the techs making sure that the ATM on the other end is up to par, which could be "clean" with a new modem, but if you do not look at the stats before the switch, and after, you will never know.
