    I just noticed that the Advanced tab is missing from IE8 "Internet Options" under the Tools menu. I am not sure how long it has been missing. I have tried the fix suggested to restore the tab but this did not work. I have not noticed any other issues with my computer but thought it was possible I could have some sort of malware causing this issue. I have attached the requested files, I hope!

    Thanks so much, Lisa

    2 logs attached to this post, will attach the other 2 to the next post

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    This may not be a malware issue; however you need to attach logs from the below that were also requested:
    • ComboFix
    • RootRepeal
    • MGtools
    The problem could just be due to a registry change or a group policy setting which has modified the below registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

    and replaced the AdvancedTab value with a data value of 0x00000001

    Normally it is 0x00000000

    I went to the registry key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel and this is what is listed:

    Default REG_SZ (value not set)
    Advanced REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
    Advanced Tab REG_DWORD 0x00000000(0)
    AdvancedTab REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
    Reset WebSettings REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

    I have attached the requested files although I was not able to run the Root Repeal as I have the 64-bit version.

    Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

    What are you currently using for antivirus??

    Java(TM) 6 Update 26 <--- uninstall outdated Java.

    Was this a restriction you purposely set up?
    • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    • O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "combofix"=-
    DirLook::
    C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Local\{5F7C603E-64F6-432A-8805-730806262E8E}
    C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Local\{898F53C3-F083-4DC7-B6B5-798C6F0234FE}
    Folder::
    C:\Windows\14FCFE7CAB86428A9D2EBFB6F5A7AA6E.TMP
    File::
    C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\cn0q0g8yst1034y3q2a5u013716kp
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let us know how things are running now!

    Thanks so much for your help. I worked late all week so this is the first chance I had to go through your instructions!

    I was using AVG for anti-virus but uninstalled it when going through the initial instructions prior to posting. I couldn't figure out how to disable it. I plan to re-install and keep current as soon as this issue is fixed.

    I have never set up any restrictions that I am aware of-at least not on purpose!

    I had no problems following any of the instructions or updating the Java. I still do not have the Advanced tab though.

    I have attached the requested files. Thanks again. I appreciate your time very much!

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    • O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Delete these empty folders.

    C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Local\{5F7C603E-64F6-432A-8805-730806262E8E}
    C:\Users\Lisa\AppData\Local\{898F53C3-F083-4DC7-B6B5-798C6F0234FE}

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!
