This may not be the right category to pose this question, but my mother has a friend who is a stroke victim and cannot speak. We are trying to find something similar to a laptop computer that will allow her to type messages for people to read so that she may communicate with people . We want to spend as little money as possible on this device, and dont care if it is a toy from Toys-R-Us, or something from a medical supply company, price is the biggest issue. Internet connection will not be necessary, can anyone point me in some direction here, ive been googling all morning and cant come up with anything other than a cheap laptop for $300. We want to spend less than $100, the less expensive, the better . It doent even have to be an actual COMPUTER, just something she can type on with a display that other people can read.

I went searching for qwerty cellphones and someone mentioned Treo.
You may be able to pick up a used Palm or Treo cheap. Since you don't want any service, if that part doesn't work properly, it would still be okay because you'd see the text on the screen. All you want is a screen to show text and a qwerty keyboard to type it in.

I know this software that I used to play with a while ago. It's called talkit and I used it as a toy back when I was a kid, but I don't know where to find that now (granted I didn't look very hard). I'm sure there are quite a few free text-to-speech programs around too. One of them being Ventrilo, but you need to be on a server to use that feature.

I'm sure it's not to hard to find a copy of Talkit though.

EDIT: you can download talkit here. (It's also called talkany) http://www.nakido.com/FCBC2B5C034738507625465E1597BE55EA9D7AEF
