Advice on XP

I need some advice from anyone.

I've been using Win98se since it came out.
Since that time I've been using it to record my music and the music of other musicians here in my recording studio.
I have bought $7291 worth of programs for recording, mixing, mastering, effects, etc.
A total of 28 programs. They are all very reliable and have served me very well and can continue too.
Unfortuneatly, all but one of those companies are out of business to date.

The first of this month, June, I picked up my new XP and watched as another guy, who bought my formated win98 machine, drove away.
Happily I brought my new rig home. I spent two days poking around XP learning this and looking at that. Then I began installing my old software.
The only software I could install was Sonar XL.
XP refused to install the other progs, about $6700 (less the price of Sonar) worth of good software, because of some policy issue.
Sonar doesn't even work right. It lags and stutters on play back of any size track, no matter how small, I have recorded.

Does anyone know a way around this?
I don't want to fork out about ten grand (approx price of new progs from different software companies) to replace perfectly good software for some policy problem with XP. I'm not asking for hacking advice. I'm a musican, not a hacker.

If there is no way around this, could someone tell me if I can use a win98 boot disk and format my two drives that has XP, clean, so I can install of win98.

I know how to install the win98, just not sure what to use to format XP off the drives.

If anyone has any other ideas on this I'd sure appreciate some advice on what to do. I'll not shed a tear over loosing XP as I don't care for it anyway. It's slower than my 800 MHz win98 machine was.

For the monitors: I read the posts at the top of the page, days ago, and I did run a search but didn't find what I was looking for, or didn't know exactly what to put in the search.

XP has a nice little tool called Compatibility Mode.
Open Explorer. Go to the program of your choice. Right click the executable. Click Properties, Then click the Compatibility tab. In the Compatiblity Mode section, check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for:" And then you can choose Win98/ME.
It has worked for many programs. Hopefully, this will help.

Agree with Doc to use compatibility mode first. Since your new to XP. Check out
www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp (beware, some tweaks are bonus, If you have questions about tweaks, come back here)
    www.blkviper.com
Also have you gone in window update, install SP1?
Download all drivers for all of your hardwares?
How to delete Win XP partition so you can format the harddrive, put win xp cd in cd rom, boot on it, you will wait for a few mins to enter win xp set up, click contiune without creating or repair, find delete option in set up where you can delete partition, pick your harddrive and click D then contiune, it will ask you to confirm, click L to go ahead, then exit using ESC key without anything else and reboot on Win 98 if you want to give up Win XP, then format and install win 98.

Failing compatibilty mode, pick up a windows 98 boot disk. and a windows 98 install cd, boot of disket type format c:\ All data on that drive POOF then
You reboot onto diskette again, pop in windoiws 98 cd then go to CD rom drive type setup.exe and follow the steps.

Make sure your account is an administrator account and not a power user. XP will sometimes refuse to install programs unless you have administrator rights.

    Hey Doc.
The compatibility Mode worked for a couple of the progs I have. The others won't take. :(
Just another mark on the board under the Con Side.

    Johner.
I don't want to buy third party software to make my operating system work.
Mark two under the Con side.

    DrDs.
Administrator Rights? Just another hurdle I'd rather not contend with. All I want is a simple O/S that will take my shareware progs, not have to chase all over the internet on some wild goose chace looking for drivers, and logging in from one person to another. Sorry for ranting. I find XP and all it's little hole filled safety modes a waste of time. I will admit, it uploads and downloads a bit quicker. That's all I have found that I can honestly say is better than 98.
All I want is to install my software on a system that I don't have to tweak a top of the line O/S or sign in and out to beable to get back down to business.
Mark three under the Con Side.

    Lamien.
Thank you. I wish this were a mark for the Pro side, but since this will wipe XP off, I can't really say it's a plus for XP.
I'll gleefully wipe XP off this machine today and revert back to a simpler to use, more reliable and Older Shareware compliant O/S that is more user friendly than XP is.
I apprecitate the walk through. I'll send you a copy of my CD when it's completed.
I know you can't wait for that,,,, but it's all I can do to pay ya back for your help.

Right, well the performance of XL is caused, almost certainly, by your wrong use of sound-card drivers. What sound-card(s) are you using?? You need to go to the manufactorer's web-site and download any WDM drivers they have.

I, also, write/record music, so I should have an idea of at least whether some of your songs work under XP. Give me a list, and i'll tell you what I know.

When it comes to Sonar I'd have to agree with ChViRuS: I use Sonar on XP with no problems. I also use a bunch of other audio apps as well with no problems (Wavelab, and tons of heavy plugins) and I've never run into problems. I'm only using a SB Audigy -but I've kept the drivers upto date and I've stayed on top of Windows update. I also have a friend who makes a living recording and he recently made the jump from 98 to XP and he's been really happy with the switch. My advice is to run Windows update; grab drivers for your sound card and then try reinstalling your apps. If that doesn't work for you you can always put 98 back on: but imo audio plugins seem to run smoother under XP.

    All my drivers were up-to-date.
Some of my progs were 16 bit, others 32 bit. I had problems installing both. XP squawked about the 16 bit the loudest.
The compatibility worked for few, but if XP couldn't handle all my needs, I don't want it just to be an up-to-date hep cat.

Good to see some other recording people here. :)

Well, I dumped XP and installed 98. A drastic difference in speed. Much faster.
I've installed all my recording software and it all works.

    fiver22, ChViRuS?
You guys ever go to homerecording.com?

Again, lamein, thanks for the walk through. :)

ChViRuS. Geeze, sorry. I forgot to answer your question.
I'm using a SB Live as my secondary sound card and a Terratec EWX 24/96.
I also switch from the SB to a Delta 66 with the omni breakout box once in a while.

I'm using Sonar 1.3 XL. This is really a great multi-track recorder. I've tried several but happen to like the interface of this one the best. I've been using this for 2 years now. Been upgrading since ProAudio8.

I have another Mulit track recorder with a great built in mixer.
It was developed by Kingston-Rowe. I bought it back in 00. The multi-track recorder is rather difficult, a high learning curve, like a five year project for me. :(
I use the mixer though and it came with a great editing program too.

My masting software it Burmaties Pro 2.1 Around 98 -99 sometime. Four seperate EQs, parametric, graphic, etc.

Those are my two main big ones besides Sonar.
Since I record other people and groups I have to have a bunch of 'specalty' software for all occasisions.

Anyway, I'm happy to be back with 98.
    Rock on,
    Boodie down,
    and Jelly out.

Otherwise try to install VMware and install a "virtual" windows 98 machine and install your stuff in there. If you have enough memory this will work just fine. Don't think this is a hard program to use because it isn't.
