What sort of battery life are you getting in hours or days?

Sadly most smartphones these days have poor battery life, my HTC HD7 will on general useage get around 2 days max, my iphone 3g will get a day max.

You can do as you have already mentioned turn off as much as possible, check what apps are running and updating in the background, email, facebook, weather apps etc

but in the end its a balance between what apps you need and how long you are willing to go before you need to charge. However adding another app to manage a battery is adding IMHO to using battery life up and if its just an app for settings you can do all of them manually without paying.
