Good Afternoon,

If this is not in the right please, please put it to the right one

I will try and keep this as short as I possible can.

I have a laptop and back in 2008 the system crashed because of a Windows Update and the whole laptop became unresponsive and I had to take it to a 3rd party to get it fixed and the cost of £35 + £4.10 for the bus to get there and back.

Then a few weeks ago, it happened again, back to the town I went to get it fixed for another £35 + £4.10 bus fare.

I then email Microsoft to complain against it and to try and recover my funds due to Microsoft causing it.

I get told no because I did not contact Microsoft Support first, but I had no way as I dont have a phone and I work from my computer so I needed it back fast.

Then last week I needed to install Service Pack 2 for Vista and a kind person from support did it by disabling everything so nothing could conflict and it worked.

Now, I am probably going to confuse my self here but I should not have to disable everything to get updates to download and install.

I emailed Microsoft back and this women called Kat Deshong said that they wont refund me anything.

I would like peoples opinions on this as I feel I am in the right and they are in the wrong.

How would support be able to do anything when nothing would respond :S

Microsoft are never going to refund you money you have spent on resolving a software (Operating System software) problem on your system if you did not contact them for help first. Plus the kind and level of help Microsoft provide depends on the type of Licence that came with your Operating System - there are several kinds depending on whether you purchased a full retail version or whether it was pre-installed with the physical hardware by its manufacturer.
Also, it depends what the *cause* of the problem was and, contrary to what you may think, it may have had nothing to do with MS software at all.
Also, it depends what the third party repair person did to resolve the problem, and whether they were able to isolate the cause, or just back up your data and reinstall the Windows OS. You should always ask for the fullest feedback to avoid future problems.
As far as contacting Microsoft Support, they would reasonably argue that, even if you personally do not have a telephone (or online email connection because your system crashed) that you should seek to use a telephone elsewhere or an internet connection elsewhere (a friend, public library, internet cafe).

You can always ask here too and knowledgeable users will guide you through ways of resolving a system crash.
