After downgrade OS, sys shows multiple floppies

I just downgraded my OS from XP to win 98se. This is an HP xf328 laptop. I have found and installed most of the drivers and am up and running, however, I now show three floppy drives in the "My Computer" window. I have drive a(flop) b(flop) c(HD) d(CD) and e(flop) e being the actual USB floppy drive. The other two are non-existant as the only on-board drives are the CD and HD.

The sys info says the two phantom drives are running in DOS mode. Clicking on, or doing a mouseover on drives a or b causes the system to hang. Drive e (USB Drive) seems to work fine.

This has me puzzled, to say the least...

Can I get rid of the two phantom drives? If so, how?

i know with cd drives (virtual ones that is) you can use Alcohol 120% but i'm not sure if it works with floppy discs, i'm sure there is an equivalent version out there somewhere.
have you tried entering bios and do they show up in there? if so, can you disable them or even remove them???

Does not look like that will help. I will probably have to fork over $70 to replace my HP recovery CDs and go back to XP.

It looks like Microsoft has recognised this problem. Go here.

And if that doesn't help, try going into your Win 98 Device Manager, deleting the offending drive entries, and letting Windows find the hardware and re-install whatever drivers it needs -- if any.

You may need to have the Win98SE CD-ROM handy.
