    Hi Guys,
am pretty good at sorting stuff out on the pc front. I have loaded/built loads of pcs. I have a laptop I was given so I formatted the drive (30gig) and wanted to load xp pro on it just to give it to a mate. I loaded it up ok and when it restarted it stopped on the xp screen with the progress bar stopped. So I tried in safe mode and it booted ok. I had a look in device manager and there were vga and audio drivers missing.
The motherboard is a SIS 650 so I got the gart and agp and audio drivers and loaded them in safe mode. Still the same thing. I rebooted in safe mode all drivers now OK. Tried a windows repair still same thing. Have run disk diags and system check all hardware seems fine (PCCheck). Have trawled google only to find hits on SP3 issues. this has SP2 embedded in the xp image

I am at a loss as to where to go next. Anyone accept this challenge. Cheers Guys

Can you find anything in the Event Viewer that could indicate why Windows would stop during the normal startup process?

hi Pwillener, thanks for the response. I have studff in the event log but not sure if it is relevant. In the system one I have DCOM error but it says this service cannot be starteed in safe mode so I dont think thats relevant. The other entry is service control manager event id 7026. The following boot start or system start drivers failed to load...
    AFD
    Fips
    intelppm
    IPSec
    MRxSmb
    Netbios
    netbt
    Rasacd
    Rdbss
    Tcpip

Some are network rtelated but not sure if this is the culprit any help appreciated..

    steve

PS other service control errors are event ID 7001 which all point to tcpip or network. will try safe mode with networking to see if that hangs

Did any of these disappear after you installed the network driver?

Can you try to configure your network differently, e.g. remove Netbios, and/or change TCP/IP settings? Not sure what else I can recommend...

removed socks and socks2 from registry and also removed tcip from add/remove installed componets in safe mode but still same. This did have xp on it prior to reload but it froze. I am wondering if I have a network hardware issue may try and disable it in bios but not sure I can

Does that computer have some standalone hardware test?

no standalone diags I ran PC check on it all passed. Tried another load but with selective install of network and left off 1394 but it still hangs on bootup. Never had one fox me as this one does.:confused

I found a setup error in the event log and it told me to inspect the setup error txt file in windows . This was in it?? have tried several different load cd's

The modules mentioned in that error log all seem rather harmless; Internet Explorer or Internet access related. I do not think this is the cause for your problem.

Nothing else in the event logs that could indicate why the startup fails?
