Age of Empires 2 AOK Res in Win 7

I know the game is old, but I also know that it is compatible with win 7 it plays fine in 4:3 mode, but i cannot get it to play in full screen. When attempting to change the resolution to 1280X1024 but the option is unavailable- even thought it is staring me in the face i can't click it - but it is not greyed out -

what's up with that?

 

Looking at the age of the game, it may not support that resolution. That said, do you have DirectX9 (or whichever version the game requires) installed? Win 7 doesn't have Dx9, and though all the DirectX versions are supposed to be backwards compatible that doesn't always work out. Get Dx 9 here and install it, and also try playing around with the many options on the Compatibility Tab in the file properties of the game's main exe. Visual themes often cause issues for older games.
