Age of Empires 2: my screen scrolls

Whenever I load the game, it immediately (and quite quickly) scrolls hard to the left, and slightly upwards. I un-installed and re-installed the game three times and have the latest driver for my graphics card.

I have a desktop, and therefore I have the standard keyboard. My arrow keys are not stuck. Also, I was able to play the game before, and yesterday when I loaded it it worked. But now...the scrolling

What should I do?

Do you have: A wireless keyboard? A Strategic Commander or similar device?

Wireless Keyboards like this have a tendency for certain keys to stick fffffffffffffffffor example. The Strategic Commander will simulate the keyboard, as well as getting stuck on things, or leaned on. Great for playing the game, not so nice when it breaks it.

Have you tried the simplest method of rebooting? I'm not being condescending, but I knew a guy who spent a month re-installing the same piece of software, only to find a restart solved it instantly.

 

I rebooted the computer, with all peripherals save the keyboard and mouse removed. The game worked. I then plugged each in one at a time to see which was causing the problem. And it still works. I have no idea what's wrong.

However, it also worked before by rebooting. I send my computer to standby every night instead of off, could that be a problem?

 

It might, but it's doubtful. The only other time I've encountered this problem, was wwayy back when trying to play Baldur's Gate on a little Dell. It did not have enough RAM, so it would act as if the 8 key was being held down. Not much problem, except for naming the character.

But I know for a fact that AOE2 is not that much of a memory hog. What else do you have running?

ZoneAlarm, PeerGuardian(disabled), MSN Messenger, AdAware, Spybot S&D, Alienware Dock, Logitech Mouse & Keyboard, OpenOffice 2.2 Quickstarter

 

Try turning off MSN, Alienware Dock, and OO's quickstarter.

Also, here on MG you can find Startup Control Panel, which slots into control panel, and gives you a list of all the stuff that starts when Windows does, so you can stop some stuff from doing it every time.

Note: If you're on a high-speed, always on connection, you need the firewall, adaware, and spybot. If you have Dial-Up, you can turn them off when not connected if you'd like.

 

ok. well I'm on the college campus's network, so they should have their own firewall.

as far as I know, it's fixed. I un-installed zune 2.1 or w/e and now have it back down to 1.4
