Age of Empires I, II (all)

Hi,

I have recently been trying to run AOEII on my computer.

256meg ram
1.6 AMD sempron

however when I try and run the game I get a pop up Could not initialize graphics system make sure your video card and driver are compatible with directdraw.

I have no problems with many other games.... So I am not sure what is going on... I have two video cards... maybe that is causing a problem.. they are...

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this I would be eternally grateful.

Do you have any older games than AOEII cause it may be the game is to old for the grapgic card. thais was the only idea i could think of.

 

would definatly try pulling one vid card out and just keeping the better one in the system, im not real familiar with either so hopefully you have some idea. also something to think about is if your driver is updated. this is especially important if you're running win xp. chances are unless you purchased the vid card and installed it after having xp on the system you're using a semi generic microsoft vid driver. try checking out the manufacturers website and getting an updated driver -- dont be too concerned about whether or not its been certified or whatever for xp -- just back up your system first so you can roll back if need be.

Well through some searching I have found that Age of Mythology has problems with the cards I have installed. Not in their white list. People have fixed it but it seems like a lot of trouble.

I am assuming that it might be the same for older games. I play other games fine, just have problems with the AOE series.

I will probably get an older Nvidia card or something similar and replace the cards I have but for now I will probably run it on our other computer (the funny thing is that our other monitor was starting to go and when I installed the game it quit seems as if I am not supposed to play this game).

Your best bet is sticking with an ATI or nVidia card, as the majority of games will work with these cards
