Well, hello again all you computer literate people. I seem to be full of questions and I am sure that after this one, everything will be fine for a while.

I went out and got a replacement ATI Radeon 9550 256Mb Card and I have noticed that this one is a little different. This replacement one has this little white 3 pin connector, or is it 2, well, you get the picture. The questions is, what is it for? Is it for external power or something or is there something that attaches to the AGP Card? Please help. Need an answer.

    Thanks to all!!! :) :) :p

The AGP Pro slot has a few extra pins which supply extra power to the graphics card. However, AGP Pro has not become widely accepted. Instead, modern desktop grade power-hungry video cards are equipped with a separate power source, either through a Molex or peripheral plug for additional power. Generally, there are two types of AGP Pro slots, regarding necessary power : 50 W or 110 W , with or without molex connector on the graphic card (although standard AGP slot is confined to 42 W of power through slot itself).

There are two versions of the AGP physical interface, for 3.3 V and 1.5 V cards respectively. The 1.5 V version has a key further away from the external connector, while the 3.3 V version is the opposite. But some poorly designed older 3.3 V cards incorrectly have the 1.5 V key, which may result in burnt mainboard if installed in a AGP 4X/8X slot.

A small 2-pin or 3-pin connector is most likely a fan connector. If it is a 4-pin connector, it is for extra power to the card. Does it look like the same connector that is used on a hard drive for power? Or is it smaller?

Hey there Wyatt Earp. It is only a 2 pin connector so my guess is that is more for a fan. The unfortunate thing is, I do not have a fan on the AGP Card. Can I buy them seperately and attach it to the Radeon 9550? Or, is that just the way that the Radeon is assembled? Thanks for your help.

Oh and thanks to you too TimW. It is only a 2 pin connector so I am thinking what Wyatt said. It may be for a fan which is not connected to the AGP Card. Have you got any more info on the Molex? Also, in conjunction to your comment about the Mainboard power problem, that it can burn out, I think that is what happened to my last card. I actually think that it burnt out and that is more likely due to the fact that it was assembled incorrectly.

    Thanks heaps.
