Alrighty, where to begin. First, my machine. I run a AND Athlon XP 2500+ processor. 512 MB ram. A assylum 128 MB Gforce FX 8X AGP card. My mothernoard has a integrated realtek ethernet adapter. But all of that works very well.

I can't find help anywhere for fixing my problem. I use AIM and I like to send pictures of projects here on the farm to my family all over the state. But any time I try to direct connect with AIM to send any of these things, it resets my DSL modem. And I'm not talking about a freeze up. It actually turns the power off then back on, on the modem. I have SBC DSL with a Efficent 5100 B DSL modem.

Now, I've tried about everything I can think of to try and get it to work. And about 1 in 100 tries it will actually work without resetting my modem. I have updated the firmware in teh thing. I just down right can't figure it out. ANy help would be appreciated. You can usually reack me at Doxtheotter on AIM or by e-mailing me at doxtheotper@sbcglobal.net if you have any quick suggestions.

    Thanks for everything guys.

Have you tried without AIM? Such as just downloading something or browsing with out AIM running? I would suspect either your dsl modem, or your dsl connection/line. An application shouldn't be able to powercycle your modem. I would recommend you put a call in to SBC.

Everything works wonderfully untill I drag AIM into the equasion. I can download, surf, play games..anything. And I mean anything, except a direct connection through AIM. I can connect through Yahoo IM, MSN, ICQ...just not AIM. But I am able to chat on AIM just fine.

I don't know too much about AIM, so I 'm not sure if I could help you very much. Are you using a DSL router? I would be curious as to if you had the same issue with a router in place. If you don't have a router, and even if it doesn't correct the issue, I would still recommend that you have one, preferably one with a firewall built in. Also, are you running the latest version of AIM?
Has it worked correctly in the past? If so, what changes were made, and when did you notice it stop working.
It almost sounds like some type of buffer overflow of some sort, the modem can't handle it, so it resets itself (????). Is there anyway you could "borrow" another modem from someone, to see if it's an issue with the modem?

    Alrighty...

It works about 1 try out of 50. It will fire up and work normally. I do not have a router because SBC DSL doesn't like it around here. I do own a Lynksys router, but it causes me a lot of problems, so I just run Windows XP Pro with Service pack 2 firewall enabled. Yes, I run the latest version of AIM. And my modem is the only one I've ever seen that does this. My roomie has his own phone line with his own seperate DSL account and modem on it and his works just fine. However, I am able to get double the speed he is capable of. So I don't think it's a modem problem. I mean... I transfer files with YAhoo IM altl eh time and it never gives me problems.

The best technique for troubleshooting is process of elimination, if possible. If your roomie has the same make/model of modem, it would be worth a shot to see if you get the same issue using his modem, and if he gets the same issue using your modem. Or, you could contact SBC and just tell them that your modem keeps powercycling, and they should send you a new modem. If it's not the modem, heck, at least you got a new modem.
Regardless of what app you are using, or what you are doing with that app, a modem should never powercycle itself like that. I suspect you have a faulty modem.
