I have a windows network on 8 or 10 computers. I get a message that I do not have access to another computer even though I have file sharing turned on for all the computers. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

    Thanks........

    Hi

If you can provide more information then this may trigger a thought from someone on the issue you have as networks can be complicated to troubleshoot without a fair bit of background info like:

What are the Windows versions and Service pack level of the PCs on the network and especially the version on the PC you are using and the PC you are trying to connect too.

What security software is on the PCs?
What error messages if any do you get when trying to connect to the target PC, please the message verbatim as it helps?
Was this PC accessible in the past on the network and if so was any new software added to this PC?

What things have you already tried in troubleshooting this issue?
But some thoughts without more info are:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/...uters-running-different-windows=windows-vista
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/troubleshoot-network-connection-problems

I know the above are for Vista but they will be similar steps to other Windows versions but knowing the Windows versions of target and main PCs and messages given will help track down a possible solution.

Thanks for you advice and request for additional info.

Both computers use XP sp3 and are updated weekly.
Avg security is used on one, and Security Essentials on the other computer.
Both computers are home built, about 2 or 3 years old.
One is a i3 intel with a MSI mobo., the other is a amd fx with a Asus mobo.
Both are checked for rubbish with ccleaner and defraged monthly.
Both computers are backed up weekly with Macrium and both are used every day.
Both computers are able to access other computers on the network (6) units and a network printer; but they cannot access each other.
I haven't added any software that I can think of.
They worked OK 2 months back.
The error message I get from both computers is:

\\Cindy-office\sharedocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The message from the other computer is the same except for the name (Chas-102).

    Any help would be accreciated.

    Thanks, Al
