Alesis io 26 and Sonar LE or Cubase LE

I am having issues at school getting an Alesis IO 26 FW device to work with windows... Windows does not see this as a sound card. I am running Windows Xp Professional, with a 2.40 ghz processor and 2gb ram. I know that windows can see it..as a sound card.... becuase in device manager its there... BUT when i go control panel/sound and audio devices i get nothing. i click on the tab Audio and try to select a new device to use and i only have one device and that is the onboard sound card. If anyone has any information that can help me that would amazing.

EDIT= One more question...., could it also be the firewire card?
