All Downloads Suddenly "Blocked"?

    Greetings.

I have attempted to search-out an answer myself - to no avail. Am now quite weary of searching/reading. Am wondering if there might be a fairly "common" issue or mistake made that blocks all download attempts (?).

In the process of trying to clean-up and simplify a family members PC, I have apparently checked (or UN-checked) a box somewhere that has limited the ability of this PC to accept downloads (or perhaps something in an anti-ad/mal/spy program is blocking - but have not really changed much of anything there).

XP Home running IE7 with Zone Alarm Suite (Firewall/AV & Anti-Spy), Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D, WinPatrol - thats about it I suppose. Have StarDownloader (Free) but have never had a lot of luck using it. Had been using the Firefox browser with one of their Download "manager" plug-ins - but dropped Firefox from this PC at least for the time-being to again -TRY - to clean & simplify things - for a bit.

    Thanks in advance - g ...

    Re: Downloads Blocked

You are familar with ex 7 and the drop down box, under the tool bar that you have to click on to allow the download, Firefox dosent do this. ed

Yes, thanks Ed, I think you're referring to the "Information Bar" (I think that's what it's called) ~*'Microsoft has blocked an attempted Active X download - click here for more info.' *~ (or something to that effect). I click on that, and then on "Allow" - to no avail (?) Nothing happens after that - attempted downloads will not proceed from that point - none ... nothing.

    Thx again - g ...

In IE click Tools, Internet Options, and then click the Security tab. Select the Internet icon and then click the Custom Settings button. On the Security Settings window that pops up scroll down until you see the Downloads item. Make sure you have it set to Enable

    Was that your problem?

Thanks Chaslang, and though I do think that you are "on-to something" here for me, ticking (or checking/selecting) that particular box/setting did not do the trick. I am attempting this from the Admin. account, but am getting a pop-up box (the kind with the red "X" ) that unfortunately reads:

    C:\Documents\Settings\Owner\Local Setting...
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

    Any other ideas?

    Thx again,

Try downloading to a different location like the desktop.

When you start the download choose save instead of run? I think and then choose the desktop or My documents folder and see if that helps.

Thank you BB - I'll give that a try in just a bit - when I'm free - will let you know how it works-out! ;)

OK BB & all that seems to have taken care of the "problem" for the time being - thx to all!

    Happy geekin',
